a" NEW YORK—Dr. Abba Hillel Silver and Dr. Stephen S: Wise,
Co-chairmen of the American Zionist Emergency Council, hailed the
British Government'S announcement of the formation of a Jewish
Brigade as recognition of "the justice of the Jewish claim to fight
under their own flag against the oppressors of their people."
i. Dr. Silver and Dr. Wise expressed an "earnest hope that the
recognition thus accorded the Jews as a people in the armies of the
United Nations will be a preliminary to Jewish representation at the
Peace Conference and in the councils of the nations in all matters
affecting the future of European Jewry and of Palestine."
Pointing out that the British Government's announcement
comes "as the culmination of a struggle which has been conducted
since the beginning of the war by the World Zionist Organization,
and in this country by the American Zionist Emergency Council, for
the recognition of the right of Palestinian and Stateless Jews to fight
as Jews in the war against the Nazi aggressor," the statement added
that the Jewish Brigade Group—

The adult education committee
of the Jewish Community Center
is planning an intensive training
course for youth leaders, Morris
Garvett, chairman of the commit-
Dr. Raphael Mahler, eminent tee, stated this week.
"The purpose of the course,"
scholar, author and lecturer, will
come to Detroit for a series of Mr. Garvett said, "is to give
young people of the community
an intensive background of Jew-
ish history, literature, philosophy
and ideals."
The course will be given on
eight successive Sunday after-
noons, beginning Oct. 22. Out-
standing experts in their respec-
tive fields will be invited to par-
ticipate in the training course. A

variety of subjects will be cov-
ered, including Hebrew literature,
Yiddish literature, the Talmud,
Jewish community organization
and Jewish philosophy.
The training course is planned
for young people who are active
as presidents or cultural chair-
men within their own groups. It
is intended for the young people
to be selected for the training
course to have a direct influence
on their own groups, and to make
their programs more meaningful
and worthwhile.
The course of eight lectures
will be offered free to Center
members. There will be a nomi-
nal charge for non-members. Ap-
plications are now being accepted
by E. Louis Neimand, assistant
director of the Center.
Those who wish to enroll
should apply immediately, since
attendance will be limited.

"Will desire above all to play its part in the invasion of
Germany and in the rescue of what survives of the Jewry of
Europe."
"The Jews were singled out by Hitler for mass extermina-
tion. Today they no longer fight as anonymous units and they
are entitled also to a voice of their own in matters which will
affect them in the._-great decisions that are about to be made,"
the statement declared.

In a cable to the Executive of the Jewish Agency, of which Dr.
Chaim Weizmann is President, the American Zionist Emergency
Council extended congratulations on the success of the Agency's
"untiring efforts for the establishment of a Jewish military force,"
and added that "this belated recognition of Palestine Jewry's splen-
did contribution to the war effort gives renewed hope and encour-
agement in the struggle for the realization of our aspirations for the
establishment of Palestine as a Jewish Commonwealth."
The Hebrew Committee of National Liberation - congratulated
Lord Strabolgi, chairman of the Committee for a Hebrew Army, on
the occasion of Britain's consent to create a distinct Jewish Brigade
to participate in the final phases-et the war.

Zionists Welcome Establishment of Jewish Brigade
WASHINGTON—Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the Zionist
Organization of America, in a statement issued here, characterized
the announcement by the British War Office that a Jewish Brigade
would be formed from Jewish battalions recruited in Palestine as a
"token recognition of the Jewish contribution to the war effort."
Declaring that the announced "creation of a Jewish brigade com-
posed of those gallant battalions of Jewish youth already serving in
Palestine , is a source of satisfaction to Arrierican Zionists," the Zion-
ist head, hailed the new_brigade.
He stressed the fact that 1,500,000 Jews now are serving and
fighting in the armies of the United Nations; adding that 500,000
Jewish boys are fighting in the American forces.

'Jewish Refugees in Britain to Join Brigade
LONDON, (Palcor)—Certain categories of Jewish refugees in
Britain and also volunteers from among the refugees in Italy and
those interned on Mauritius Island will be permitted to join the
Jewish Brigade, the Palcor correspondent learns. Conferences with
regard to the Jewish Brigade are now in progress between Secretary
for War Sir James Grigg, and Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president, and
Moshe Shertok, chief of the political departments of the Jewish
Agency.
The official announcement of the War Office with regard to the
Brigade reads:
"His Majesty's Government have decided to accede to the re-
quest of the Executive of the Jewish Agency for Palestine that a
Jewish Brigade Group should be formed to take part in active opera-
tions. The Infantry Brigade will be based on Jewish battalions from
the Palestine regiment, and a necessary concentration of forces is
taking place for training them prior to their dispatch to the theaters
of war. Supporting and auxiliary units to complete the group are
based on existing Palestinian units, and on units under preparation
and will join the Infantry Brigade as soon as practicable. Details of
the scheme are being discussed with the Jewish Agency which has
been -invited to co-operate in its realization."
The JeWish Agency issued the following statement: The entry
of a Jewish fighting force against the enemy of the Jewish people
for mankind's freedom will symbolize the status of Israel in the
fight for a better world. The composition of the force will give con-
crete expression to both Jewish unity and the central place of Pales-
tine in Jewish life."
"The formation of the Bricsade Group," the Jewish Agency
states, "comes at a late stage of war, but it is an acknowledg-
ment of the services rendered and takes into account the Jewish
desire for national recognition. May it be given that the Jewish
Brigade carry the Star of David in pride into the land where it was
used as a badge of shame, and bring the message of hope from Zion
to the Jewish survivors of the horrors.
The Brigade Group will be, for all practical purposes, a small
division comprised of infantry, artillery, Royal Engineers, trans
ports, signals, ordnance and ambulance sections, your correspondent
le-arns. It is intended to appoint as commander for the new force, a
Jew holding an appropriate rank in the British Army. Distinctive
?markings are under consideration.

Rosenwald Protests Against Jewish Brigade
PHILADELPHIA (JPS) — Lessing J. Rosenwald, president of
the American Council for Judaism, revealed That he addressed the
following telegram protesting against Britain's formation of a Jew-
ish Brigade Group to Secretaries Cordell Hull, Henry L. Stimson
and James V. Forrestal:
"Newspapers report the British government decision to form
so-called Jewish brigade under a so-called Jewish flag. We hereby
protest against that action and designation. We urge that our mili-
tary .and civil officials be warned against that error and instructed
to use accurate designation of Zionist brigade and Zionist flag.
Americans of Jewish faith are and always have been in American
armed forces. The flag of Americans of Jewish faith is the Stars
and Stripes."
The allegation that the American Jewish Conference, while
advancing "a case for unequivocal equality of rights" for Jews
everywhere, is pressing through its Palestine Resolution a demand
"denying to others equality of rights," is made in the lead article
in the latest issue of the Information Bulletin of the American
Council for Judaism. The discrimination charge is based on the
- demand by the Conference that the Jewish Agency be given control
over immigration into Palestine.
