Representative to Be Sent
With UNRRA to Study
Needs in Freed Areas-

NEW YORK, (JTA)—A repre-
sentative of the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee will be included
in the delegation which the Un-
ited Relief and Rehabilitation
Administration will send to- lib-
erated Poland to study needs of
the local population, it was an-
nounced by Dr. Joseph J.
Schwartz, European chairman of
the JDC.
Dr. Schwartz also revealed
that Jewksh relief groups in
France who cOnducted under-
ground relief activities during
the German occupation had been
provided by the JDC with 350
million francs for aid and rescue
work. About eight thousand
Jews, he said, have been taken
from the Balkan countries to
Palestine with the JDC, cover-
ing 90 percent of the cost of
their rescue and transportation.
The other ten percent was cov-
ered chiefly by funds contrib-
uted by individual Jews in Pal-
estine. For this rescue work
alone, the JDC appropriated
$3,000,000 in the past few months.
The JDC, Dr. Schwartz con-
tinued, is sending 10,000 foOd-
and-clothing packages a month
to Polish Jews in Russia. "Now
that the Russian government has
agreed to permit an UNRRA
mission to enter Poland, we have
the opportunity to learn the
status of Poland's Jews," Dr.
Schwarz said.
Dr. Schwartz disclosed that
the JDC is taking steps on be-
half of the Jews of Romania
and Bulgaria similar to those al-
ready taken in other liberated
territories. "The work of rescue
and relief now under way in lib-
erated Italy indicates some of
the problems which the JDC will
face in other areas as they are
freed," he said.
The JDC for the first nine
months of this year appropriated
more than $16,600,000, he point-
ed out.

`Soviet Government Invites
UNRRA Mission to Russia
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
UNRRA now is preparing to
send a mission to Russia in res --
ponse to a request from Moscow
for investigation of relief needs
there. The mission probably will
consist of about eight persons.
Director General Herbert H.
Lehman is endeavoring to get
together the appropriate per-
sonriel for such a mission.
What is contemplated for Rus-
sian relief in war-devastated
areas is an arrangement with
the Soviet armies similar to that
which now prevails with the
Anglo-American armies. The
armies are responsible for food
and the most urgent health,
clothing and shelter measures in
liberated territory for six months.
If UNRRA comes in during that
time on army invitation, the
army furnishes the food. After
that initial six months period
UNRRA furnishes food.

Dr. Eisendrath Urges
World Atonement Day

BOSTON, Mass.—A suggestion
that the whole world join with
Jews everywhere in observing
the Jewish Atonement Day was
made here, in Temple Israel by
Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath, di-
rector of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations, in h i s
sermon at Temple Israel.
Rabbi Eisendrath pointed out
that the age-old Jewish hope•
that the New Year will be gen-
uinely a happy one seems at
last possible of realization at
this Holy Day season., He ob-
served that we of this genera-
tion may have the precious priv-
ilege of ourselves creating a new
world when the flood of de-
struction will have come to an
end, when the enslaved will have
their shackles broken, when the
tyrants one after the other will
be stripped of their power and
hounded into oblivion."
