Somewhere In Palestine, These soldiers of a Jewish fighting unit of 1-he
British army gathered on New Year's day to blow the Shofar at an outdoor
service, to pray for Israel's redemption and for the freedom for which the
civilized world is fighting today. ,On Yom Kippur, hundreds of thousands
of Jewish soldiers who are fighting in the armies of the United Nations
will join in solemn prayer that justice and righteousness shall be establish-
ed on earth for all mankind.

The photograph reproduced on this page assumes historic significance upon
the opening of the New Year 5705 by virtue of the announcement made by
the British War Office that 'a Jewish Brigade is being formed for active
operation in the fight against Hitlerism. The Jewish Brigade, organized at the
request of the Jewish Agency for Palestine after years of pleading for
recognition of • a distinct Jewish fighting' unit, will be composed of Jews
now serving in the British army and of Jewish refugees to be recruited in
