Horse Blood Serum

NEW YORK (JPS)—A serum
made from. the blood of horses
is effective against typhus, Dr.
M. Wolman, a Captain in the
Page Forfy-severi
British Army Medical Corps, re-
ports in the science magazine
Lancet, according to The New
York Times. Dr. Wolman inject-
ed horses with rickettsiae, micro-
organisms from the intestines of
infected lice. The serum made
from the blood of the horses was
given to every second patient in
a series of 440 typhus patients in
Addis Ababa in eighteen months.
Only 3.6 per cent of the patients
treated with the serum died, com-

Look closely at this Palestine

most feel the clods of earth, see
the grain shooting up from the
soil, while above there is just

A THEME FOR PARENTS
One of the things our co,untry
can take great pride in is the will
our parents have to provide bet-
eduCation for their children
than they themselves had. To
that determination - must go much
credit for the great advances
made in education in our. country.
In these war days the educa-
tional ambition of parents for
their children - has to- compete
with the lure of wartime jobs.
How to persuade'3roUng people to
put school ahead of any job not
absolutely necessary is one of the
hardest problems parents of teen-
age boys and girls are struggling
with today. _They need all the
ideas- anyone can give them. Here
are several:
"If I Were Young Again"
If you were, would you crowd
more schooling into your early
years? Why are you so sure? Do
your ruminating dut loud with
the boy or girl who is having a
hard time making up his or her
mind to enroll for classes this
fall. Thd tale of your lost oppor-
tunities may strengthen that
child's deterinination not to re-
peat your mistakes.
Share Your Dreams
When the war is won, great
leadership will be needed to re-
build the world and make every
community a good place to live
in. You believe that. Help your
youngster to believe it. And the
biggest chances for leadership,
you know, will come to the best-
trained yotuigi 'people. YOu want
your youngster trained and ready
when peace comes. School's the
best place to get the. rounded ed-
ucation peacetime leaders must
have.
Half a Loaf Is Better
Maybe your youngster must
earn some money. Maybe the
Figures released by the Jewish
National Fund on the advent of

possessions in Palestine have
been increased since the out-
break of the war from 471,000
dunams to 710,000 dunams, and
that in the same period the num-
ber. of colonies has been in-
creased from 247 to 285. Thirty-
six of the 38 new • settlements
that have been established are -
located on the land of the Jew-
ish National Fund. Returns from
agriculture have grown from LP
600,000. ($2,400,000) to LP. 3,-
000,000 ($12,000,000), showing an
increase of approximately 400%.
