Lionist Emergency Efforts
The description of the current battle for
the ,protection of Jewish rights in Palestine,
by Bernard Lerner, published in last week's
issue of -The Jewish NeWs, reveals that an
important, job has been accomplished by the
American Zionist Emergency Council, under
the leadership 'of Dr. Abba Hillel Silver and
Dr. Stephen S. Wise. '
Since the assumption of the committee's
chairmanship by Dr. Silver, great accom-
plishments have been recorded and dangers
which threatened the future of the Jewish
National Home were averted.
Dr. Silver has earned the gratitude of
American Jewry and his people's uninter-
rupted support and `cooperation in whatever
efforts may be undertaken in the figure by
the American Zionist Emergency Council.

Detroit's United Hebrew Schools will
launch annual observance of Education
'Month beginning With Rosh Hashanah.
The general aims of the month's observ-
ance are implied by the word: Education.
Objectives of Education Month have been
discussed for a number of years, and the
Jewish community knows that the intention
of educators and lay leaders in the United
Hebrew\ Schools is to draw the -attention of
the community to the importance of giving
every Jewish child a thorough Jewish' edu:
cation. 'It is hoped, as a result of Education
Month activities, to increase the schools' en-
rollment and to enlist many more children
as pupils.
The year 5705 will give additional impor-
tance to the call for increased interest in the
educational needs of our youth. Our boys
• and girls must' be prepared- to face issues
which were hitherto limited to the youth of
Europe. They must know -why they should
be participants in all efforts for the recon-
struction of Jewish communities in Europe.
They must understand the value .of a Jew-
ishly-redeemed Palestine. They must learn
not to become.panicky over the rise of anti--
Semitism and must .be trained in the art of
dealing with bigots.
Leaders in our educational movements al-
ways have sought to place positive emphasis
on cultural activities. Reconstruction work
and civic-protective efforts may imply 'a
negative note. But they are necessary and
important aspects in training the coming
generation of Jewish men and women and
our future leaders.
One of the first replies to the Hitlers who
are destroying Jewish life in Europe and the
Smiths who are threatening our existence in
America should be the positive JeWish ap-
proach of giving every Jewish child a thor-
ough Jewish education.
We dare not fail in this responsibility.

What is, the significance of the Fast of
Gedaliah on the day after Rosh Hashanah?
Who was Gedaliah? ,
--J. J.
Gedaliah was the man who was appointed
Jewish governor of Judea 'by the Babylonians
after the subjugation of Palestine. He was sub-
sequently murdered by his fellow-countrymen
(II Kings, 25:22 ff) and because of it the fast
day was declared and has been observed ever
since.
Talmudic Tales
(Based upon the ancient legends and philosophy found' in
the Talmud and folklore of the Jewish people dating back
as far as 3,000 years.)
By DAVID. MORANTZ
HE WHO HONORS HIS PARENTS
Abimi, son of Rabbi Abahu, was the father of
five children, - but he would not permit any 'of
them even so much as to open the door for
their grandfather, or attend' to any of his wants
when he himself was at home. He felt it was
his own duty to honor his father as he expected
his own children to honor and respect him. One
day his father asked him for a glass of water.
He went to 'Obtain - it, but upon his return to the
room with the water, he found his father -had
fallen asleep. Accordingly he -stood by his
father's side with the glass in his hand until he
awoke, rather than disturb his father's rest.
