The records so far catalogued include a fairly complete list of French. Quislings who were paid by Von Abetz for denouncing Jews. The German Ambassador had classi- fied the Jews in price categories. for 3-Day Profit On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish Community Council reiterated its stand taken for the past two years urging Detroit Jews to withhold support from mushroom synagogues which may be operated for religious services during the Holydaysz It is pointed out in the Coun- cil's statement that attendance at privately established services in stores, public halls and the- aters is not in keeping with proper observance of the Holy- days and that the use of such buildings creates an undesirable impression upon observers and neighbors in the community. Private Gain Charged The statement charges that mushroom synagogues are usual-: ly conducted for private gain of individuals and therefore intro- duce an element of commercial- ism into a sphere which tradi- tionally has been free from it. The religious feelings and needs of many worshipers are exploit- ed for the profit of the sponsors of such synagogues." The Council's declaration adds: "The establishment of such three - day - a - year synagogues offends the religious sensibilities of many Jews of our community. Their obvious commercial char- acter, their irresponsible and ui- dignified methods present a taw- dry picture of the Jewish faith to the community at large. Strong Disapproval "The Jewish Community Council of Detroit therefore ex- presses its strong disapproval of such makeshift synagogues. The CouncU appeals to .Detroit Jews to atitnd services during the Holydays in established syna. gogues in our community which function as educational and spir. itual centers all year, and thus aid in removing an eyesore and a baneful influence from Jewish communal life. "By abstaining from attend.• ance at temporary synagogues, Detroit Jewry will sound the death knell of an unworthy and unwholesome phenomenon char- acterized by confusion, irresponsi- bility and commercialism. We add our plea to the plea of all re- sponsible leaders in American Jewry that this evil be removed from the Jewish scene." Parker Guest Soloist On.
