Jewish Pupils, Teachers Excused
From Schools for Rosh Hashanah

Postponement of the reopening of the Detroit Public and
High Schools until Sept. 18 by the Board of Education, at the
request of the Detroit Board of Health, due to the spread of
infantile paralysis, has brought the following statement from
Warren E. Bow, superintendent of schools, assuring parents,
pupils and teachers that Jewish children and teachers will be
excused for not attending classes on Rosh Hashanah, Sept. 18
and 19:
"Absence from school on Sept. 18 and 19, due to the ob-
servance of Rosh Hashanah, will not be considered different
in any way from absence on Rosh Hashanah of any other year.
No exceptional penalty or loss will be occasioned because the
first day of school is involved. Parents, pupils and teachers can
therefore adhere to their usual practice with reference to Rosh
Hashanah."
This statement was issued after the Jewish Community
Council and the Vaad Harabonim, the Council of Orthodox
Rabbis, had informed Mr. Bow of the concern of Detroit Jews
over the reopening of the schools on Rosh Hashanah.
When postponement of reopening of the public schools
was announced, the following Jewish schools acted to post-
pone reopening of school sessions until after Rosh Hashanah:
United Hebrew Schools, Shaarey Zedek, Yeshivath Beth Yehudah
and Yeshivath Chachmey Lublin.
