THE JEWISH NEWS

Quotation of the Week

We do not; and the vast majority of the Jews does not, advocate the es-
tablishment of a state for the sake of national greed and self-glorification,
which would run counter to all the traditional values of Judaism and which
we consider obsolete everywhere.: In speaking up for 'a Jewish Palestine
we want to promote the establishment of a place of refuge where persecuted
human beings may find security and peace and the undisputed right to live
under a law and order of their making. The • experience of many centuries
have taught . us that this can be provided. only by home rule and not by .a
foreign administration. This is why we stand for. a Jewish controlled Pales-
tine, be it ever so modest and small. We do not refer to historic rights, al-
though if there exists something like a historic right on a country, the Jews,
at least as well as the Arabs, could claim it on Palestine. We do-not resort
to threats of power, for the Jews have no power; they are, - in fact, the most
powerless group on earth. If they had had any power they should have been
able to prevent the annihilation of millions of their people and the closing
of the last door to the helpless victims of the Nazis. What we appeal to is
an elementary sense- of justice and humanity. We' know how weak such a
position is, but we also know that if the arguments of threats of power, of
sacred egoisms and holy wars continue to prevail in the future world order
not only 'the Jews' but the whole of humanity will be doomed.
—DR. ALBERT EINSTEIN.

OFF THE GRIDDLE
It looks pretty definite that the Pales-
tine resolution before . Congress may be
revived before November, with Zionist
friends on Capitol Hill certain of its pas-
sage now that both parties have included
planks along -the same line in their plat-
forms • . . Some representatives and
senators, by opposing the resolution,
would find themselves opposing their
own parties' foreign platforms which
would be unwise and indiscreet, to say
-the least . . . By the way the minutes
of 'the hearings on the Palestine resolu-
tion before the House have just been
published, "not at government expense,"
and the volume contains -- in addition—
documents and statements related to the
subject, but not to the hearings. It is the
finest single summary of the case from
all angles —' Jewish, Arab and Rosen-
wald-Berger-Lazaron.

LITTLE HUNGARY
Hungarian reformed pastor in New
York's Yorkville section, Dr. Geza Ta-
kara, the pastor who arranged a special
service in behalf of the Jews in- Hungary
and had his congregation pin on their
sleeves the yellow badge that the Jews
in Hungary are forced to wear, has been
-meeting with opposition from a handful
of Jew-baiters in the ranks of the. Hun-
garian Reformed clergy in New York
. . . We hear that the opposition came
to light at ..a co _ nference of Hungarian
Reformed clergy convened by Dr. Takara
in Legioniere, Pa., for the purpose of
formulating a program of effective pro-
test against the persecution of .the Jews
in Hungary . . . One of them proposed
that the Jews, "in accordance with the
highest ethics, should do some praying
themselves — in heir foes' behalf . . •"
Dr. Takara was not discouraged . . . His
motion having failed at -the conference,
'he began a mail .campaign among his
colleagues on his return to New York
City . . . Most replies were sympathetic,
but some entertained the same sentiments
as were expressed by the handful of
Jew-baiters at the Pennsylvania confer-
ence .. . Enlightening as to the character
and politiCal thinking of the author was
the following letter received by Dr. Ta-
kara: '_`The Jews are seeking to monopo-

ART
You, probably saw, or heard of, the
spread of artist David Fredenthal's war
paintings in Life-.last week . . . He's a
Jewish boy, a former 'Detroiter, and was
formerly on the WPA. - S. Judson, art
critic of -the Jewish Morning Journal,
recalls this interesting tale about the
artist . . . at 16, Fredenthal, who is now
29, was assisting fresco expert Boardman
Robinson . .. Perched' on a scaffold,
intense on his work,- the youngster slip- ,
ped and crashed 15 feet fracturing his
right arm. The doctor had hardly put
the arm in a cast, before Dave was
back on the scaffold, using his left
arm . . . No wonder, colleagues joke,
Dave accomplishes so much — painting.
with both arms, he . can accomplish
