mother, 'M r s .

In a graphic letter to The Jew-
ish NewS, Lt. Hershel H. Levine,
stationed somewhere on the Nor-
mandy front, reveals some of his
innermost thoughts and senti-
ments of a. soldier battling over-
seas.
When he crossed the channel
to France, Lt. Levine had the un-
forgettable experience of acting
as chaplain for his troops. The
men gathered for prayer on the
open deck while a cold rain
poured down on them. "They
were guided," Levine writes, "by
spiritual loyalty to wonder-forti-
tude that does justice now to the
wonderful progress of our troops.
Religion is as necessary as food
here . ." •
In describing the spirit of his
comrades, Lt. Levine writes that
"they all still are intensively ap-
plying everything they can to one
objective, which we feel will and
can be attained .. the destruc-
tion of Germany and all that he
stands for!"
"There is left in liberated
places," he says, commenting
about anti-Semitism in newly
freed -lands, "a certain residue of
propaganda against the Jews .. .
but time and education will have
to help us there."
Lt. Levine is extremely pleased
with the regularity and prompt-
ness of the arrival of The Jew-
ish News. "The paper," he states,
"is a source of interest and news
about the social, cultural and re-
ligious, activities of all the com-
tnunal elements in Detroit. Let
me thank you again for its timely
arrival!" -
The son of Mr. and Mrs. David
A. Levine, 1652 Burlingame, Lt.
Levine entered the service in
October, 1942. He was commis-
sioned on June 18, 1943.
