I Dr. Leo Pinsker (1821-1891),
one of the most important fore-
runners of Dr. Theodor Herzl in
the establishment of the modern
political Zionist movement, has
rightfully been considered as the
most brilliant interpreter of the
Jewish position in the world. He
was the father of the idea that
unless Jews emancipate them-
selves, no one will help them.
"Auto-Emancipation," a very
brief brochure, was the result of
his thinking. It was the most
effective brochure ever written
on the subject of Jewish nation-
al rebirth.
Based on this brochure, Sco-
pus Publishing Co., 1140 Broad-
way, New York, has issued its
latest book, "Road to Freedom."
Russification a Failure
Actually, "Road to Freedom"
contains Dr. Pinsker's "Auto-
Emancipation" - as well as his
other writings, letters and ad-
dresses. But the major import-.
ance of this book is the intro-
duction of the editor, B. Netan-
yahu, in which the life and Jew-
ish communal activities of Dr.
Pinsker are evaluated.
Those who especially concern
themselves with good will move-
ments should find much food for
thought in Netanyahu's essay. Dr.
Pinsker began his Jewish activ-
ities as a member of the group
that believed in the Russification
of the Jews. He strove for co-
operation with Christians and he
was miserably disappointed to
learn that it did not work.
Dream and Reality
Dr. Pinsker at one time dreamt
"a glorious dream" of emancipa-
tion for Russian Jewry. It proved
only a dream, and he began to
preach national rehabilitation.
His pleas in. the main fell on
deaf ears. Dr. Adolf Jellinek,
Chief Rabbi of Vienna, and Ar-
thur Cohen, British M. P., be-
lieved in him and concurred in
his views. But others discouraged
him.

To the Bigot

By HYRAM M. ZELDIS
You pace the narrow confines of
your mind,
0, cursed bigot—
And tread the labyrinths o'er
and o'er.
or mighty walls of prejudice
hem in your kind—
shutting out the light of truth
for evermore.

Your mind is warped by the acid
of hearsay,
0, foolish bigot,
And ignorance is your only
creed.
You walk, oh bigot, in eternal
darkness,
And sow the seeds of hate and
greed.

Nevertheless, the Famous Kat-
towitz Conference, his "Auto-
Emancipation" and his consistent
appeals proved the most power-
ful factors in creating_the foun-
dation for the Zionist movement.
First Warriors Fall
Later, Dr. - Pinsker met Dr.
Hermann Schapira, who was des-
tined to become the father of the
Jewish National Fund idea, and
Dr. Max Mandelstamm, and he
was heartened by the encourage-
ment of two great men.
There are. some very- interest-
ing lessons for the Jews of our
time in Dr. Pinsker's writings of
more than 60 years ago. The au-
thor of "Auto-Emancipation" was
realistic when he said that "the
first brave warriors fall." He
knew that others who would fol-
low him would lead the move-
ment for national liberation to
success.
Is the .Hour Too Late?
In Dr.. Pinsker's warnings to.
his people there is an admonition
that is applicable to our time.
He wrote:
"Our position is growing dark-
er from day to day. May this
darkness be our ally. May it be
granted that it will finally bring
light to the blinded eyes of our
contented ones. For the day shall
yet come when the East wind
which storms with great wrath
will also reach the farthermost
la arts of the West. But then the
hour will already be late."
Too many of the Western Jews
see the light too late. Some have
not - yet awakened. Will they
arise from their slumbers t o o
late?
Dr. Pinsker's works should be
read by our people today. It
will help to rouse them from
their slumbers. "Road to Free-
dom," the compilation of Dr.
Pinsker's utterances, is a very
valuable guide for Jews who be-
lieve in self-emancipation.

Jewish Newspaper
Appears in Vilna

MOSCOW (JPS) Befraiung,
the clandestine organ of the
Jewish guerillas during the Nazi
occupation of Vilna, is now ap-
pearing weekly in the liberated
city which had several widely-
circulated Yiddish dailies before
the war. Its first issues contain
records of the demolition by the
Nazis of Vilna's Jewish archives
and monuments.
Three guerrilla bands com-
posed of Lithuanian Jews still
operate behind the German
lines. The leaders of these bands
are Shlomo Brand, Chone
Magid and Aba Kovner. Earlier
dispatches about Jewish guer-
rillas referred to those serving
in mixed units of Jews and non-
Jews.
