Retiring High Commissioner of Palestine is Wounded by
Band of Gunmen Near Jerusalem; Dr. Weizmann
Cables Sir Harold Upon His Escape

By BERL CORALNICK
JERUSALEM (JTA)—The po-
lice in Palestine were engaged
in an intensive search for the
gunmen who recently made an
attempt to assassinate Sir Harold
MacMichael, High Commissioner
of Palestine, while the latter was
motoring from Jerusalem to
Jaffa to attend a farewell party
given in his honor by the Jaffa
municipality. Ten men, it is re-
ported, participated in the am-
bush near Jerusalem.
The gunmen, who attacked the
auto in which the High Commis-
sioner and his party were pass-
ing, fired their tommy guns at
the High Commissioner's car,
slightly wounding Sir Harold in
the hand. His wife received no
injury, but his aide de camp,
Major K. I. Nicholl, and the po-
lice driver were seriously in-
j ured.
Due to Be Replaced
Sir Harold MacMichael is due
to be replaced soon by the
newly - appointed High Commis-
sioner Field Marshal Viscount
Gort who is now on his way
from London to Jerusalem.
MacMichael was reported as
having much improved from his
wounds. He was the recipient
this week of a message from
the King congratulating him on
his "providential escape f r o
the cowardly attempt."
The Jewish Agency for Pales-
tine issued a statement reading:
"We are shocked to learn of- the
attempt on the life of the High
Commissioner. We are confident
that whoever the culprits be, all
inhabitants of the country, re-
gardless of race and religion, will
do everything in their power to
bring to justice the perpetrators
of the dastardly act."

The recent 15th wedding an-
niversary celebration of Mr. and
Mrs. Meyer Schiller of Flint,
which was marked by a dinner
at the 'Community Center, turned
out to be a community event,
with more than 300 people in at-
tendance.
Israel Sendler was toastmaster
and greetings were brought by
the following: Nathan Finkel-
stein, in the name of the Flint
JNF Nachlah; Morris Pelavin, of
Bnai Brith; M. Schreiber, of Con-
gregation Bnai Israel; Mrs. Send-
ler, of Bnai Israel Sisterhood;
George Litt, of the Flint Jewish
National Fund Council.
Upon request of George Dick-
stein guests were asked to con-
tribute to the Jewish National
Fund, a sum of $1,200 was given
in the Schillers' honor to Nach-
lath Flint.

read: "Allow me to express my
horror at the hideous crime, the
attempt on your life. I rejoice
in your and Lady MacMichael's
escape, but grieve that Lady
MacMichael should have been
exposed to so terrible an expe-
rience and for the injuries in-
flicted on members of your staff.
It is my ardent wish that the
evil doers be speedily discovered
and the responsibility fixed on
the guilty."
The Vaad Leumi Jewish Pales-
tine's National Council, stated:
"The Vaad Leumi learns with
horror of the dastardly attempt
on the life of the High Commis-

to express the utter abhorrence

Palestine for this crime. Jewish
Palestine anxiously desires that

Premier Sends Protest
For Attitude On Palestine
CAIRO (JTA) — The Premier
of Egypt addressed a protest to
the Democratic and the Republi-
can parties of the U. S. criticiz-
ing the planks on Palestine which
the two parties adopted at their
national convention in Chicago.
The protest was sent not in the
name of the Egyptian Govern-
inent, but of the Wafd Party.
The Egyptian Premier insists
in his protest that Palestine
would not solve the Jewish prob-
lem and that the attitude of the
American political parties in sup-
porting the Jewish claims on
Palestine is only "frustrating the
Arabs." He warns that the Arab
world will act against "the at-
tempt to disposses the Palestine
Arabs" and that "a painful im-
pression would be created among
Moslems and Christians through-
out the entire world, should
Palestine be given to Jews."
