dent of the Jewish Agency, as
one of the most able statesmen
of our time and depicting in
glowing terms Jewish achieve-.
ments in Palestine,• Sumner

"Time for Decision" that a bi-
national state along the lines
proposed by Dr. J. L. Magnes,
president of the Hebrew Uni-
versity, incorporated in a feder-
ative system to include Syria,
Lebanon and Transjordan, is the
only possible solution for the
Palestine problem.

OVERSEAS
The extinction of Poland's Jews through
shootings,- maltreatment at forced labor, in
concentration camps and through wholesale
executions in gas chambers was confirmed by
Poles captured when serving with the German
forces in Normandy, it was revealed in London
by Dr. I. Schwartzbard, Jewish member of the
Polish National Council, who interviewed the
captives. They had told him that they were
pressed into German service against their will.
The investigation of anti-Semitism in the
Polish forces is proceeding satisfactorily, Dr.
Schwartzbard, who is on the investigating
committee, announced. Observers of the Polish
government-in-exile are present at the hear-
ings. Many Jewish and non-Jewish officers
have been questioned.
The sum of a quarter of million liras has
been allocated by the municipality of Rome
to enable the Jewish Community Council to
continue its relief work. The Council expects
considerable financial assistance from Jewish
relief agencies overseas.
Five guerillas, three of them Jews, were
shot after a Nazi court-martial found them
guilty of the assassination of the quisling
mayor of a town in the province of Sarthe in
France.
The Nazi people's Tribunal in Brussels, Bel-
gium, sentenced to death twenty-five guerillas,
among them Leib Silverstein, a Jew.
The Soviet newspapers report that a guer-
illa army, containing many Jews from the
towns of Grodno, Lida, -Volkowsk and Novo-
grudik, has assisted the Red- Army in breaking
Nazi resistance and liberating Grodno.
Not .a single Jewish survivor was found in
Pinsk by the liberating Red army, the Moscow
radio reported.
A Soldier Prays
By BENJAMIN GRONER
Rabbi, Shaar Hashomayim
Synagogue, Windsor
I received a letter from a col-
lege chum of mine who is sta-
tioned in England. In one of the
paragraphs, he writes: "I made
the acquaintance of a fine family,
evacuees from London, and I
spent the Sedorim with them. We
go every Friday night for serv-
ices to this town. I never before
have "daavened" as much as
now. I know the services prac-
tically by heart."
To appreciate what the para-
graph actually means, you have
to know a, little.: bit about the au-
thor. Bernie was a bright chap
in school, always getting high
marks. Yet, like every other nor-
mal lad; he viras full of mischief.
If ever a ripple of laughter dis-
turbed the equanimity of the
classroom, the professor's wrath
was vented full blast at Bernie.
Today, Bernie isn't kibitzing
.very much. He "daavens" every
morning, even if it means getting
up a half-hour earlier than any-
body else. He's been "daavening"
so regularly and so fervently that
he has learned the prayers by
rote.
Will Bernie
continue
to
"daaven" when, please God, he
comes back home? Frankly, I
don'. know. But even if he does
put his prayer-book away, he
never will forget the wondrous
miracle that was wrought when
the drone of airplane motors
buzzing among the clouds melted
into a mystic hymn of sweet
melody with the opening words
of "Mah Tovu."
Harvard Professor
Says Palestine Only
Solution to Problem
NEW YORK.—Predicting that
anti-Semitism will exist in Eu-
rope even after the defeat of
the Nazis and that the Jewish
problem still would be "one of
the most burning problems" aft-
er the victory is won, Prof. Carl
J. Friedrich, director of the
School of Overseas Administra-
tion of Harvard University, de-
clares that the solution of that
problem is "an essential condi-
tion of a lasting and just peace"
which ranks with the elimina-
tion of the German militarists
and the Nazi Party itself.
These statements appear in a
pamphlet entitled "The Voice of
Christian Am e r i c a" published
jointly by the American Pales-
tine Committee and the Chris-
BONDS . . SECURITY! I tian Council on Pale4ine.
