brilliant • historical interpretation
and commentary on the events of
a century which brought' both
hope and despair to our people.
Dr. Elbogen died in New York
on Aug. 1, 1943, at the age of 69,
after he - had completed this work.
But he did not live to see it in
print. Having finished this great
task, we are told by his trans-
lator, Prof. Moses Hadas, and by
the -editor of the Jewish Publica-
tion Society, Dr. Solomon Gray-
zel, that he was "reluctant to have
his book appear without some
cognizance being taken of events
which transpired between the
completion of its original text in
1942 and its actual printing. With
characteristic consideration he -
forebore to trouble his . trans-
lator and composed 'his Epilogue
in English. As his last utterance
it is printed substantially as it
left his hands."

. - In this Epilogue we find an ex-
pression of faith which trans-
cends: all doubt and despair. We
, quote:
Expression of Faith
"Hitler's doom is beyond
doubt. The Allied' Nations
have solemnly :
their
resolution that those respon-
sible for ithese crimes shall not
escape retribution. But where
is the guarantee that such
bestialities will never and no-
where be perpetrated . again?
Will the ghosts of the immolat-
ed Jews harass the conscience
of the Christian nations and
bar for all ,future such barbar-
ity? • Every corner in Nazi-
ruled Europe has witnessed acts
of violence; every corner cries
to Heaven for justice, exclaim-
ing, like Job, '0 earth,- cover
not my blood!' .

shall still be far from the Mil-
lennium. Strenuous and un-
stinted efforts will be needed
to heal the wounds the world
bleeds from. Though trained
in martyrdom, the Jewish peo-
ple never before has experi-
enced such a caraclysm as has
our generation. But we go on!
We trust in the unswerving
help of our God and the God
of our fathers! Through all the
moral and spiritual crises of
the last hundred years we have
not given up our identity. We
have saved our faith, saved our
morale, saved our mental fac-
ulties. Battered from all, sides,
we were capable of giving to
the world some of the greatest
luminaries of the period. We
don't despair! As long as Israel
believes, Israel will not perish!

Society. For The Jewish Publication
Society has for its primary purpose that
of giving enlightenment through books
of Jewish interest, spreading the knowl-
edge of these fine works.
Since 1888, when The Society was
first organized, it has published 25o
of the best Jewish literary works, and
has conducted costly research so that
you might have available this Jewish
knowledge at a low price.
A great American Jewish leader, the

late Louis Marshall, once referred to
The Society as "one of the finest edu-
cational institutions that the Jews of
America or of the world have estab-
lished," because many great works of
Jewish lore might have remained un-
published to this day were it not for
The Society and its policies.
Because it is a non-profit, educational
organization, supported in part by funds
donated by individuals in sympathy with
its aims, you may now join The Society
by paying the minimum annual dues of
$5, which entitles you to select three
book units. Note that in the list those
books marked with an asterisk count as
one-half book unit; and you may select
two children's books, for example, in
addition to two regular volumes.
Thus, if you made your selection of
"The History of the Jews in Russia and

Poland" (a three-volume set), the

"Zangwill Omnibus Book," and- "Mai-
monides," your selection of five books,
with a retail value of $13.50, would cost
you only your membership fee of $5.
The selections illustrated above give you
a $9.50 retail value, a saving of 46%.
If you prefer, you may join The Sod-
ety as a Library Member, which entitles
you to six book units, giving you twice
the saving, the annual membership fee
for which is only $ro.00 As with ail

ety entitles you to purchase additional
Society books at a 2o% discount.
