Give Not to Host's Child

Of all the tragic stories coming from
abroad, revealing the sufferings of Jews liv-
ing in Nazi-held territories, those dealing
with the indignities imposed upon the chil-
dren are the worst.
Ella Winter, New York Post correspondent
in the Soviet Union, reports that Jewish chil-
dren in Botosani, Romania, related to her
how they had been forced to dig the graves
in which their parents were later buried, at
the Horodah camp.
One child revealed: "We were 2,700. In
three weeks we were170. Two thousand five
hundred children were driven from camp to
camp all over Transnistria, soldiers herding
them at bayonet point and beating them with
rifle butts to keep them going."
These are brutal facts never to be forgot-
ten and to be remembered especially when
the statesmen- of the world will meet to write
the peace and to decide on the retributi -On to
be exacted from the Germans for the crimes
they have committed against young and old.

It happened in a year of famine that three
guests called upon a poor man who had in his
cupboard only three eggs.
Rather' than appear inhospitable, he served
them this last bit of food in the house.
As the guests seated themselveS at the table,
the young son of the host came into the room and
stood before them, watching them as they pre-
pared to enjoy the food, which had been placed
before _them.
The first guest, noticing him, gave him a
share.
The second guest, desiring to appear equally
generous, did likewise, as did also the third.
There the child stood with one whole egg
stuffed in his mouth and one in either hand when
the host entered the room again.
Seeing what had happened, he became very
angry and struck the child, who fell, and hitting
his head against a sharp object, died.
The mother, hearing of this, died of the shock
and the father overcome with grief over the.
double tragedy, took his own life.
Thus did three persons lose their lives be-
cause these guests had not observed that law of
the Talmud which is as follows:
"A guest should not give anything from what
is set before him to the son, or daughter, servant .
or messenger of his host without the perMissio4 .
_.of
"One should not give anything to a child
without the consent of the parent."

Education

On the other hand, the fact that four
men who were accused of graft by the Grand
Jury were renominated and that a discredit-
ed State Senator again won. renomination, is
an indication that much educating must be
done in order to assure most intelligent vot-
ing. In the latter instance, the large field
of candidates undoubtedly helped the in-
cumbent whose name figured so infamously
in the news columns and who at one time
was sent to jail by a judge for contempt
of court.

In the three-and-a-half months that re-
main before the Nov. 7 election, the enduca-
tional campaigns in behalf of good govern-
ment must continue, in order that the unde-
sirable candidates may be weeded out and
the bast men selected for all offices—in the
City, County, State and Nation.

The Worst of All Crimes

Results of the July 11 Primaries in Mich-
igan are worth studying.
They prove both that constant educat-
ing of the public is necessary in order to lead
them .on the right track in selecting candi:
dates, and that there can be no such thing
as too much training for mature political
thinking.
The nomination for the Wayne County
Circuit COurt judgeship of William Fried-
man, who had never before campaigned for
any office, although he had held many ap-
pointive offices, was undoubtedly the result
of the endorsements given him by all ele-
ments in the community—the labor groups,
the Bar Association, the metropolitan news-
papers. The handsome vote given Judge
Friedman is a tribute to those who .came for-
ward to urge his election as the man best
qualified to hold the office that was. given
so much prestige by his predecessor, the late
Judge Harry B. Keidan.
Similarly, the nomination of Jack Ell-
stein, able labor leader, for the State Legis-
lature, on the Democratic ticket, is a result
of recognition of his standing in the com-
munity over a period of many years during
which he rendered splendid service to the
cause of labor.
