A Clever -Rebuke
During Sarah Bernhardt's first
American tour, a clergyman of
the period publicly, and through
the press, -attacked the, trage-
dienne and her classic repertoire
of plays.• Mr. Abbey, her man-
ager, thereupon sent this letter:
"Whenever I visit your city, with
my companies, I am accustomed
to spend $400 in advertising. But

Christian Science Monitor's
Persistent Nahum Grodner
A recent issue of the Christian
Science Monitor told the follOw-
ing story:
Nahum -Grodner was a noble
Russian patriarch, whose • life
was devoted to the practice of
charity. It was the custom of
Grodner to visit the city every
afternoon to collect food and
clothes for the needy people of
Grodno, his native village.
One day his plea to . a certain
rich man for a contribution was
gruffly refused. He sought to
reason with the man, but found
him adamant. Then he gently
pointed out to his listener the
vanity of man and the uncer-
tainty of his wealth and life.
Incensed, the stony-hearted man
slapped Grodner upon the face.
For a moment the man was
dazed. Then, with the utmost
politeness, he exclaimed: "Well,
Reb Malkiel,_- that was for me.
Now, what are you going to give
for the poor?".
This ' story is a classic in
Jewish anecdotal literature.
For the record, this should be
known: Nahum (a Hebrew
name stemming from the word
consolation) Grodner (derived
from the fact that he lived in
Grodrio) vas a JEWISH patri-
arch. This • anecdote has been
used on many occasions by .
Jewish - preachers in order to
rebuke the illiberal.

tion here, told a press conference,
appealing for steps to rescue
them.
He disclosed that about 3,000
Yemenite Jews are camped in
the harbor city of Aden under
indescribable conditions awaiting
an opportunity to emigrate to

group are expected to arrive here
this week, he said, adding that
about 3,500 Jews from Yemen

few years through the assistance

French 'Jews Plan
Return of Culture
In Postwar France
NEW YORK (JPS)—Night-
marishly symbolical in its fact-
ual horror is an Associated Press
dispatch from Moscow reporting
that only three Jews survived
the Nazi massacres in Wilno
(Vilna). The "three who greeted
the Red Army, were "an old man
who walked - with out-stretched
hands, a woman and a small
boy."
Wilno, famed in Jewish lore
and history, had a prewar popu-
lation of 235,000, of whom 30
per cent were Jews. No figures
are available as yet on the num-
ber of Wilno Jews evacuated in-
to Soviet Russia during the Nazi
attack in 1941. The Soviets re-
gard three -officials of the Nazi
occupational setup as mainly res-
ponsible for the slaughter of
Wilno's population. They are
Commissioner Khinkht, Gestapo
Chief Neugeboyer and S. C. Chief
Weiss. If captured they will be
liable to the death penalty.
At least 600,000 Polish Jews,
now in the Soviet Union, will
seek to return home at the term-
ination - of the war, according to
Dr. Oscar Lang; Chicago pro-
fessor who was with Father
Orlemanski on a mission to Mos-
cow for Polish American groups
friendly toward the Soviets. Dr.
Lange declared that these figures
were confirmed by Dr. .E -mil
Sommerstein, a leading Polish
Zionist and former member of
Parliament, and other prominent
Polish-Jewish refugees in the
Soviet Union.

Pretty brown-haired Berneva
Pudney, 220 Smock, Northville,
was released from Harper Hos-
pital when her physician, Dr.
H. B. Appelman, stated • that no
further medicinal treatment was
indicated.
"When penicillin became avail-
able for civilian use, surgery,
blood transfusions and continued
doctoring having failed," ex-
plained Dr. Appelman, "I decid-
ed to try this drug. As soon as
arrangements for the administra-
tion of the 'drug could be made,
I started giving her dosages_ of
20,000 units, every two hours
around the clock. This treatment
continued for eight days, neces-
sitating approximately 1,300,000
units. Further observation of the
patient is indicated to determine
the ultimate result," says Dr.
Appelman, "as we are not yet
too familiar with the drug."
A fifth grader at Northville
.Grammar School, Berneva who
attended school only three
months last year, intends to
catch up on her studies. Her
Mother, Mrs. Earl Pudney, who
feared that her only daughter
