Ecuador and Anti-Semitism

By DAVID MORANTZ

Pearls of Wisdom

Dr. Velasco Ibarra, the new provisional
president of Ecuador, has made the state-
ment that a Christian and liberal nation can
not tolerate anti-Semitism.
"Anti-Semitism is inhuman and un-Chris-
tian, and does not jibe with the Command-
ment 'Love thy neighbor as thyself,' " he
declared.
But he admitted encountering prejudice
against Jews in his country.
It is the old story. Responsible leaders con-
demn prejudice while recognizing its exist-
ence, and as long as racial and religious
hatred is not proscribed by law, as in Russia,
bigotry functions in spite of all repudiations.
If we can emulate Russian military tech-
niques and admire her successes in the war,
why not apply it also to the humanitarian
front?

"He gives twice," says the Talmud, "who
gives quickly."
"The greater a man is, the greater are his
sins if he violates any duties."
"The righteous promise little and perform
much; the wicked -promise much but do not
perform a little even."
"Sell not thy conscience with thy goods."
"He who sows brambles, must not go barefoot."
"The wine ,belongs to the master, but the
waiter receives the thanks."
"The ass complains of the cold even in July."
"Few are they who see their own faults."
"A single light answers as well for a hundred
men as for one."
"Food prepared by many cooks will neither
be hot nor cold."

Children's Corner

Scandalous Restrictions

A report from London to the effect that
the government of Palestine has deducted
1,500 certificates from the quota allowed to
the Jewish Agency under the White Paper,
to account for Jews who had left the Polish
army and remained in Palestine, reveals
anew a double tragedy. It exposes again the
humiliations which were endured by Jews
in the Polish army and reveals the unfair-
ness of the British authorities who appear to
be determined to reduce the number of Jews
to be admitted to Palestine.
The latest act of the Palestine government
is in more than one sense even more cruel
and more scandalous than the White Paper,
since it seeks to restrict the settlement of
Jews who fought under the banners of the
United Nations while others, notably Poles,
remain in the Holy Land unrestricted.

Misleading Re s . cue Groups'

Many indiscretions lave been committed
in the name of "rescue," and the setting up
of "rescue committees" under a variety of
names has, as we have pointed out on numer-
ous occasions in these columns, caused im-
measurable harm to the existing functioning
humanitarian movements.
It is regrettable that high-ranking news-
papermen should have fallen for some of the
tricks of • these "rescue committees" which
have no connections whatever with recog-
nized causes like the Joint Distribution Com-
mittee and the Jewish Agency for Palestine.
The Hearst Press, -including the Detroit
Times, have become pawns in the bands of
the Bergson group. Others have, like them,
fallen for the nonsence of the "Hebrew Lib-
eration" group.
But when a man as well informed on
Jewish matters as Philip Adler of the Detroit
News becomes a victim of their propaganda,
then it is high time to look into the validity
of existing public information services whose
educational efforts have apparently fallen
short- of the desired mark.

Italian Jewry and Tisha b'Ab

It may be only a coincidence that the broadcast from
the synagogue of Rome to the Jews of America, on July 23,
occurs on Tisha b'Ab, the anniversary of the destruCtion of
the First and Second Temples. NeverthelesS, it is a symbol
of poetic justice attesting to the indestructibility of Israel.
When Jerusalem was demolished by the Romans, the
Arch of Titus, set Up in Rome, proclaimed the death of Judea.
But the destruction of the Second Commonwealth, the Exile ;
the persecutions of the last 19 centuries and the worst enemy
of all, the Nazi-Fascist terror of our own time, were: all
powerless in their attempts to exterminate the Jewish people.
Our numbers are reduced, but Israel lives.
- The Jewish people lives because we represent an Idea
and an Ideal. We are the symbols for which the democratic
nations are fighting today, Whereas the barbarians are
waging war against the Judeo-Christian civilization.
The survival of this civilization will be echoed in the
July 23 broadcast from Rome, and the American Jewish
Committee and NBC are to be commended for making this
program possible.

The Inerasable Bloofistat4s

The great -Jewish centers in the Russian-Polish-Lithuan-
ian areas are being recaptured from the barbarians.
• Minsk is no longer in 'German. hands. Dwinsk and. Bob-
ruisk have been recaptured. Lida, Baranowicz, Brest-Litovsk
and Wilno are lost by •the Nazis to the Russians. Other fa-
mous cities will soon again be under Russian- domination. .
:Before long, it will be WarsaW.
But wherever •it is, it is the same tragedy. These cities

are now Judenrein.
Great centers that. had gained distinction as a result of
the business acumen of distinguished_ Jewish merchants and
the •scholarship - of our men of learning are now mass grave-
yards. • • , •
The deaths of: the htmdrects of thousands of Jews will
soon be avenged. But the 'wholesale murder of Jews will
leave -little . t6 be rebuilt.. •
• The bloodstains on the hands of the German barbarians
are inerasable.

Nasty ,Rumoi About 'Sheltered •Jobs )

The nasty anti-Semitic rumors about Jews taking "shelt-
ered jobs" apparently continue to be spread, having inspired
the following to be written. by 'Howard . Vincent O'Brien,
columnist for the Chicago Daily News: •

Overheard on a streetcar : "The Jews have a genius for
finding themselves safe and sheltered jobs in this war."
Ali, yes, Safe and sheltered—such as jobs in the crew of
a Flying Fortress; In a letter from a young man, now spend-
ing- his days in. bombing missions over Germany, I find these
statistics: ' "In my squadron,. 12 per cent of the pilots are
Jews; 6 per cent of theco-pilots; 30 per cent of navigat-
6rs, and 20 per cent of the -bombardiers."
For my money, a job in a B-17 with the 8th Air Force
is about as far from safety and shelter -as anything I can
imagine.

Every week, in our own columns and in the reports pub-
lished in the daily newspapers, there are names of Jews who
have .either died .on the battlefronts or have been wounded;
Jews who are either lost or are prisoners.
But - these are argumentS that either do not - reach the
anti-Semites or do not touch them.: Hitlerites are not moved
by factual proof of • Jewish loyalty and of the contributions
made hy our people to the advancement . of- the .needs.. that
serve mankind. Therefore, constant emphasis -On. the truth
is necessary, in order that the prejudices may be broken. Mr.
O'Brien belongs to the group of writers who are making • an
important contribution towards the restoration of • decency
and sane thinking -among the American people.

Dear Boys and Girls:
I have heard from a number of our readers
who indicate what they would like to do when
they have completed their schooling.
Many of the boys and girls have shown a de-
sire to go in for newspaper work.
Some have told me that they like to write their
-impressions of things they see or read about.
This column affords an opportunity to all of
you to write your views on Jewish life.
If you write brief essays or short poems, why
don't you send them to this column for considee-
ation? There is a good chance .that most of your
contributions will be printed.
I always welcome letters from my readers, and
I hope that many of you will make use of yOur..
free hours during the summer to write to me.
A pleasant Sabbath to all of you.

The."New World" and "Olam Habah"
' Our 'London contemporary relates a good story.. -
In one of the Hebrew - schools there was a dis-
cussion of the term "New Order" as applied to the
post-war world.
Some of the children objected. to the use of the
term because it sounded Nazi, and the suggestion
was made that "New World" be used instead.
The ;teacher asked the•children haw they would
translate "New World" into Hebrew, and one of
the children raised his hand -and suggested:
Mri
("Olam Habah"—meaning the world to come).

"The Ideal . Jew," by Eleazar of Worths
"The• true Jew will deceive no man. He will
not only not rob or defraud, but he will as little
think of misleading another man by prevarica-
tions as by direct falsehood. He will speak the
truth in his heart, for G-od the Eternal is a God
of truth. It is He from whom truth flowed first,
He who .created truth. If a man has sinned,' let
him repent with all his might, pray earnestly
for pardon, and go and sin no more. And then,
if trials come upon - him greet them with joy.
Reprove thy erring brother, and so lead him
gently HeavenWarcls."

A 1iece of Matzo for a. Swastika Badge
Little Moritz came one day from a Berlin
school during Passover with a swastika badge - .
pinned to his jacket.
"What are you doing with that thing, IVIoi_.
shele?" cried his astonished and outraged parent.
"That?" replied Moritz blandly. "Oh, I
swapped. a piece of matzoth with Fritz Muller
for that."

The Russian Enigma

Markoosha Fischer's Interesting Description=

of 'Life Under Stalin

Louis Fischer's wife, Markoosha Fischer. an-
swers many • disturbing questions about Russia
and: enlightens the readers on many doubtful
issues in her book "My Lives in Russia" (Har-
per's).
Thoroughly. devoted to Soviet Russia where she
had lived and worked, written and translated, for
years; where their two sons, both now in . the U.
S. Army, were born. she is - a disillusioned wom-
an as a result of the events that followed the
1936 purges.
"I began to suffocate in Moscow from lack of
freedom," is the way she explains it, after de-
scribing the events that followed the mass mur-
ders. . She; like her husband, the famous . foreign'
correspondent, does not believe that the confes-
sions of the condemned leaders Were genuine. She
believes that they were either inspired by a prom-
ise to have their lives spared or the revolutionary
zeal to take the blame for Stalin's blunders.
.• - In any event, Stalin emerges a discredited fig-
ure: in 'Mrs. - Fischer's book. But she believes that
world - cooperation tor the gdbd of humanity, not
for conquest, will compel Russia to fit into such
a new world.
Of particular interest hi Mrs. Fischer's "My
Lives in Russia" is the reaction of her sons to the
capitalistic world. They were upset when they
learned . about the distinctions that were made-
between nationality groups, when they first vis-
ited in a resort in Czechoslovakia. "In Moscow he
(Viaya) never knew who was a Russian Tartar,
Jew or .Armenian." Later, when, after much dif-
ficulty in securing passports, they came back to
this •country, in 1939, "they were-deeply shocked
by the discrimination .they found against Jews,
Negroes and other minority groups.'
This most interesting book should be read !
'all int--e.,q-a in
in order to reach a fuller
understanding of the conditions under Stalin.
