ELECTION FRONT
In fairness to* the Republican Party
please remember that the Republican
Nationalist Revival • Committee • has no
connection with the official Republican
Party. Although they are trying to use
pressure on the regular Republicans, the
Reviviists, who were collaborators of
the American First Committee, are not
very happy with Mr. Dewey as a can-
didate . . . Behind. the Revivalists is
Gerald L. K. Smith, as are other anti-
Semites ... They will be very active in
this presidential campaign and will try
to work in close connection with Father
Coughlin's St. Sebastian Order . . . They
want to defeat Roosevelt, but are reluct-
ant to support Dewey, so that they are
in something of a spot . . . They should
be fearlessly exposed by the Republican
National Committee and that, we under-
stand, will be done • . . All: of this re-
minds us to point out that the Muncie,
Ind., newspaper entitled "X-Ray" is the
worst anti-Semitic sheet published any-
where . . . It is carrying on a campaign
against "the New Deal Rats and the
Jews."

PALESTINE NEWS
Don't be too surprised if the British
government agrees to the formation of
a Jewish Army, into which some 20,000
Palestinian and stateless Jews will be
put . . . In the first World War the Jew-
ish Legion was finally formed in the last
year of the war.
The Jewish Section of the Internation-
al Workers' Order is preparing to launch
a great project in Palestine.
Watch out for the September issue of
Digest and Review . . . It will contain a
sensational article by Johapnes Steel, un-
der the title "The Truth about Palestine".

BIOGRAPHETTE.
Israel Matz is a little man of 75 who
looks like a miniature edition of the late
Lord Reading . . . Some 60 • years ago
he came to this country from Riga with
exactly nothing in his pocket . . . Now
he is the owner of the Ex-Lax Manufac-
turing Company . But his real claim to
fame lies in his many philanthropic ac-
tivities for the revival of Hebrew liter-
ature and culture ... He was the closest
friend of the late Reuben Brainin, and
was associated with him in practically
every Hebrew project of importance dur-
ing Brainin's lifetime . . . He has don-
ated many hundreds of thousands of dol-
lars for Hebrew literature and is, unques-
tionably the greatest living patron of
Hebrew culture . . . So the other day
Israel Matz was made an honorary rnem-
ber of the Hebrew Pen Club.
Parochial Schools
Urged by Mukdoni
Dr. A. Mukdoni, publicist and literary
critic on the staff of the Jewish - Morn-
ing Journal, Yiddish daily, advocateS the
establishment of parochial -schools as the
only effective instrument of Jewish edu-
caticn. He "finds that. the • "Jewish sup-
plementary schools" (supplementing the
public school) have scored some success
by making Jeviish youth aware of its
Jewish heritage, evoking in youth respect
for Jewish values, but have done very
little to implant in the younger genera-
tion a knowledge of Jewish culture.
"The Jewish supplementary school is
Completely nullified by the full time
public school". Three or four hours of
Jewish schooling a week mean nothing
in comparison to the thirtY-six hour week
of the public school. The big school erases
the influence of the small one.
"The alternative is obviouS . . . The
Jewish school must become a full time
school. The Jewish child should even be
*aught•English . in the Jewish school .
The Jewish Child must spend thirty-six
hours a week in the Jewish school. The
Jewish child should not be torn between
two schools."
MN:alling that the Zionist Organization
of America has instituted a commission
to study the possibilities for establish-
ing a full-time school under Zionist aus-
pices. he urges that the commission—the
very appointment of which is laudable—
immediately proceed with practical work.
He lauds the Mizrachi,, Orthodox Zion-
ist Organization, for taking steps toward
the establishment of a school of its own.
This should encourage other groups, he .
says.

'WO
R is almost impossible for a civilized mind to grasp the reality of figures
given but this week as to the fate of Europe's Jews. The World Jewish Con-
gress estimates that as many as 4,000,000 out of total populations of 7,000,000
have been done to death by the Nazis. A Swiss refugee organization, the Flucht-
lingshilfe of Zurich, has gathered, checked and -published evidence that 1,715,-
000 helpless human beings. were scientifically wiped out in two years at two
great camps in Upper Silesia. Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden of Great Britain ,
this week confirmed reports that the Hungarian Government, long believed to
be at least a little more humane than the Berlin murderers, had undertaken to
exterminate its Jewish population of about 450,000, and had already sent about
100,000 to the Nazi death camps. A similar process is under way with the Jews
of Czechoslovakia.
Let us compare these figures with some others that shock us: 3,000 or fewer
killed by robot bombs in London; more than 56,000 American soldiers and
sailors killed in action, and, if we like, the civilians slain in the Allied bomb-
ings of military objectives in Germany and occupied Europe. Then.let us re-
member that the JewS in Europe are dying for no crime and because of no
Military necessity but because they are different from their murderers and
obviously superior to them. An appeal is now being made to President Roose-
velt and Premiers Churchill and Stalin to issue a warning of retaliation against
Hungarian cities and towns if in that country, at least, the m.urclers do not stop.
Presently the murderers are likely to wash their hands and suggest that
we get together on a compromise peace. It is time to make clear that there will
never be any kind of peace whatsoever for them alive and at large, and that it
will be a hard and stern peace for all those in any Axis country who could have
rebelled against their crimes and did not.

SMITH DISLIKES DEWEY
It is natural that the major interest of
the next four months should be in the
Presidential election.. Much is at stake
in the selections. the 'voters will make in
November. If Thomas E. Dewey is chosen
to replace Franklin D. Roosevelt in the
White House, it will be the first change
in 12 years—and the transformation is
certain to create anxiety until stabiliza-
tion .is achieved.
In one field the situation is static: on
the anti-Semitic front.
The rabble-rousers do not like, never
did like, FDR. They have accused the
President Of being a Jew or a tool in Jew-
ish hands.
The- moment Wendell Willkie repudi-
ated them, he, too, became their target
as. "a tool of the Jews."
i Dewey's turn. The. Republi-
Now it is
can nominee had spOken in favor of a
Jewish Palestine at a gathering in New
York, and he . took occasion at that time
to attack Gerald -L. K. Smith:. So—the
Smith following is being warned against
Dewey. Smith says that Dewey called
him and his America First party follow-
ers "rodents." Therefore, the ratble-
rousing former preacher is now seeking
a new candidate; else he will form a par-
ty of his own.

DEWEY THE "MESHORER"
Smith's attack on Dewey is not new.
It began before the Republican National
Convention. On May 31, 1944, a commu-:
nication went . forth "To Republican
Leaders and Delegates of the National
Republican Convention," under the head-
ing "Give : Us a Choice—An American!"
The six-page single-spaced _mimeograph-
ed letter was over the name of Mary
Jane Leach, Secretary, but the material
was identical with the type of stuff
Smith has been, distributing.
This Message conderfined Dewey; en-
dorsed Gov. John W. Bricker; mentioned
Eric Johnston among the "dark horse
The major intention of this letter was
to "expose" Dewey. Here is one of the
.airgtmaents that was used against the Re-
publican nominee under the heading
"Meet Mr. Dewey": •
"From Dewey's college days when he
was a cantor in a synagogue he was
fawning at the feet of international Jew-
ry. `The New Republic' (advocate of re-
volutionary :socialism and Irould-be pur-
ger of American Congressmen in 1940),
2-12-40, states: 'Dewey went to Aim.
Arbor, was graduated from the Uni-
versity of Michigan in 1923, and then
moved on to Columbia in New York City-
. . S In his senior year a synagogue -of-
fered, him $30 to sing on Fridays and
Mr. Dewey became a cantor as well .
Here you have it! Dewey was a "mesh-
orer" in a synagogue! He was, of all
things, a CANTOR! Therefore, America
must beware—especially since a cantor
had dared call Smith and his followers
"rodents."

DEWEY AND MEDALIE
The Mary Jane Leach communication
makes other. points. The one that will un-
doubtedly be used more often than any
other against . Dewey is that he was "dis-
covered" by George Z. Medalie (former
U. S. Attorney for the Southern District
of New York; former president of the
New York Jewish Federation; member of
the executive committee of the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee; formerly affilia-
ted with American Jewish Congress). .
The line of attack is clear: the rabble-

JEWISH FRONT
There is a storm brewing in the Na-
tional Community" Relations Advisory
Committee. It appears to be taking the
shape. of an Anti-Defamation League ver-
sus: American Jewish Congress combat.
In this particular conflict, the Jewish
Labor Committee may side with the
Congress. The issue — jurisdiction, just
which activities of the separate organiza-
tions represented in the National Com-
munity Relations Advisory Committee
are to be taken over by the National
Community. Relations Advisory Commit-
tee, also whether they are to be taken
over piecemeal or all at once.
We erred in reporting that Labbr Zion-
ist groups will withdraw from the Zion-
ist Youth Commission if the rumored
ZOA-Hillel Foundation allignment takes
place. The Labor Zionists are not in the
Zionist Youth Commission. They threat-
ened to withdraw their members from
Hillel Foundation, as did the'Mizrachi if
the rumored Zionist Organization of
Arnerica allignment went through. Your
columnist now learns that the rumored
deal between Hillel and the ZOA is off.

GENERAL WHO CAPTURED MINSK
There is a report afoot that Jewish
General Tcherniakhovsky will soon be
elevated to the rank of a Field Marshal
with the. Soviet forces. He commanded
the forces that captured Minsk. What is
most interesting is the fact that almost
all Jewish centers recaptured by the Red
Army were in the territory liberated by
this Jewish general. It is • almost as
though fate had chosen. a Jew to beat the
Nazis, in, the places where Jews had suf-
fered most at Nazi hands . He rose fast
in the. Red Army. A Major General in
May, 1942; he was promoted to Lieuten-
ant General in February, 1943, after lib-
erating Kursk. In 1944 he was named
Colonel General, now he is a full Gen-
eral . . If the reports about his being
raised to the rank of Marshal are true,
then he will be the youngest Marshal in
the Red forces.

BEHIND THE GOP ZION PLANK
It was. Senator Taft who helped put
through the Palestine plank of the Re-
publican platform. Facing some oppo-
nents in the committee room, he proudly
and dramatically announced: "I have
been a Zionist and my father was one."
Republican National Committee • Chair-
man. Brownell, busiest man at the con-
vention, head of the Dewey strategy
forces, found time out to fight for the
Palestine plank. Governor Dewey him-
self went to bat, and phoned from Al-
bany several times to assure support for,
and passage of, the plank.
rousers will follow the Hitler method of
using the Jews as scapegoats.
But their efforts are doomed to failure.
The Democratic party nominees are cer-
tain to follow the line of sincere oppo- :
sition to anti-Semitism, anti-Negroism,
any sort of racial or religious discrimin-
ation.
Gov. Dewey has already repudiated
the anti-Semites.
GoV. Bricker has rejected the offers
of affection from the Smith rabble-
rousers.
Now, by constant and fearless con-
demnation of rabble-rousers, perhaps
they can be completely put out of busi-
ness after the. November elections.
Together with all liberals, let's try, it.

JEWISH ISSUES
Differences of.opinion are developing
within the leadership of the American
Jewish Conference . . . Though the Chi-
cago session of the Conference has been
postponed, opinion among its leaders re-
mains divided 5 on the issue of whether or
not the Conference should extend the
scope of its activities into the field of
American Jewish problems . . Henry
Monsky opposes such an extension since
it would bring the American Jewish
Conference into conflict with Jewish
groups doing anti-defamation work, or
conducting relief work, or engaged in:
other activities concerning the internal.
American-Jewish scene . . Dr. Stephen
S; Wise and Louis Lipsky are for such an
extension . . . They find the program of
the American Jewish Conference, as it
stands at present, too limited since it is
restricted to the resolutions on Palestine,
on the rescue of Jews in Europe, and on
post-war Jewish problems . . . Strongly
supporting Monsky's view, that the Con-
ference. may face a bitter battle should it
try to widen its program on the domestic
front is Judge Morris Rothenberg . . . He
believes that before taking any decision
on this subject, the Conference must
come to an understanding with the exist-
ing _ Jewish organizations in America
which have been doing this kind of work
for years . . Otherwise, he warns, in-
ternal opposition may develop within the
Conference itself.
THIS AND . THAT
The Jewish Daily Forward, largest
Jewish newspaper, refused to accept a
paid advertisement lauding the Hebrew,
Committee of National Liberation. • '
Leopold Schwarzchild, well - known
German7 Jewish political writer, urges -
that the Allied occupation of Germany
should continue for the next 60 years if .
we really want peace in Europe. -
Gracie Fields, the prominent British
stage and screen actress, donated the pro-
ceeds of her income from the film "Stage
Door Canteen" to the United Palestine
Appeal in London.
Elihu .D. Stone, the energetic Boston -
Zionist leader, has returned to this coun-
try from a five-week tour of Curacao,
Jamaica and Panama where he launched
campaigns for the Keren Hayesod.
Dr. Mordecai M. Kaplan, noted Jewish
spiritual leader, is now advocating intro-
duction of a rule in all Jewish Congrega-
tions providing at least three years of
Jewish education before allowing a' boy
to become Bar Mitzvah . . . He also urges
the abolition of Sunday school classes for
all children above the age of 10, and
placing these children in regular Hebrew
schools.
Nalewki. Story
Zalman Shneourrs ."Downfall" Re-
constructs Polish-Jewry Tragedy -
During Last War
The greatest living Hebrew c and Yid-
dish poet, Zalman Shneour, who also has
written a number of novels, reconstructs
the Polish-Jewish scene during the last
war in . his latest novel, "Downfall,"
which has been issued by Roy Publishers,
25 W. 45th St., New York.
In. Mn Shenour's "Downfall" we see a
trend, which has also been followed by
Sholem Asch and the late I. J. Singer,
to piqure the life of the Jews in Eastern
Europe as it was affected by the Ger-.
man campaigns of the past 30 years. Mr.
Shenour's novel limits itself to the events
during the German occupation of Poland
in the last war.
The significance of "Downfall" lies in
the able description of the status of Na-
lewski—the famous Jewish business
street in Warsaw—and its people. The
heroes of Shneour's story, Jacob Shatz
and his family; their tragedies and love
affairs; their business dealings; the rise
and fall of a great business house—these
will serve to emphasize historic realities.
"Downfall" also shows the brutality of
the Germans during their period of con-
.trol of Poland, when they requisitioned
all they could and thereby destroyed•
businesses like the Shatz family's. But
it is evident that the German brutality
of the last war was only child's play
compared with the 1944 version. In 1915:
there was a semblance of freedom under
the Nazis. Today it is all slavery.
'Downfall" makes very 'interesting,
readiAd and is an excellent study of
events of 30 years ago to be compared
with tdday's.
