systematic looting of Jewish property in Hungary is contradictory
to the Catholic preaching, the prelate told the Hungarian people
that "it is incredible" that they , would join "in a hymn of hatred
and willingly submit to the blood lust and brigandage of tyranny."
His appeal was beamed to Hungary and is expected to be relayed
also to other Catholic countries.

Silver Hopes Democrats
Also Will Back Palestine
Commends Inclusion of Pro-Commonwealth Plank in GOP
Platform; Dr. Stephen S. Wise Charges FDR
Was "Unjustly Accused"
NEW. YORK, , (JTA)—Satisfaction with the attitude taken by the
- national convention of the Republican Party towards the Palestine
problem was expressed here by Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, chairman of
the American • Zionist Emergency Council Upon his return from
Chicago where he delivered the invocation at the Republican con-
clave. He emphasized that he hoped that the national convention of
the Democratic Party "will likewise adopt a strong pro-Palestine
plank."
Commenting on the Republican Palestine plank, Dr. Silver
said: "The clear and forthright demand for unrestricted Jewish
immigration and land ownership in order that Palestine may be
constituted as a free and democratic commonwealth in accord-
: ance with the full intent and purpose of Balfour Declaration is
most heartening indeed. When I discussed this subject with Gov.
Dewey in New York City on June 1, the Governor stated that he
heartily approved of the Jewish commonwealth resolution pen&
ing in Congress and that he would do all he could to help the
cause. In Chicago he made good his promise."
Disclosing that Sen. Taft, as chairman of the committee on reso-
lutions was "extremely helpful," Dr. Silver declared: "It is my hope
that the Democratic party when it assembles for its convention in
Chicago in July will likewise adopt a strong pro-Palestine plank. I
believe that the political conventions will pave the way for early
favorable action on the Palestine Resolutions when Congress recon-
venes."
Says FDR "Unjustly Accused"
The section of the Republican platform in which President
Roosevelt is accused of only pretending to support the Balfour Dec-
laration was attacked by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise addressing more
than 1,000 guests at the dinner given in honor of Rep. Sol Bloom by
the Palestine Grove Representation Committee.
Emphasizing that President Roosevelt was "unjustly accused" by
the Republicans, Rabbi Wise asked Rep. Bloom to tell the audience
' how unfair the statement was.. Mr. Bloom said he had discussed
Palestine on many occasions with the President and that there was
not the slightest doubt of the President's desire to see. the Balfour
Declaration fulfilled. A grove has been named after Sol Bloom in
the George Washington Forest in Palestine, it was announced at the
plinner.

America First Party, announced his support of Governor John W.
- Bricker, Republican nominee for Vice-President, and reiterated his
opposition to Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York, Republican
candidate for President, - who "called my- people, the America First-
ers, rodents—that means rats." Governor Bricker was described by
him as "one of America'S noblemen."
Governor DeweY was asked at a press conference here whether'
he welcomed the support of Col. Robert McCormick's Chicago Trib-
une. "I don't know that I have the support of The Tribune. I shall
welcome the editorial support of every good American in the United
States," he said.
(Gerald L. K. Smith stated in Chicago on Saturday that his
American First party will start a campaign to draft Senator Burton
L. Wheeler as the Democratic nominee, since they are dissatiSfied
with DeWey.• He said: "If this fails we will be compelled to form
'..-our own. party and nominate our own candidate for President. We
are not satisfied with Dewey. He called us 'rodents' and we cannot
forget that.").
