Friday, July 7, 1944 THE JEWISH NEWS Rabbis Endorse Commonwealth And Free Ports Rubbinical Assembly Told of Manpower Shortage, With 250 Rabbis in Service LACKAWAXEN, Pa. (JTA) —Resolutions urging full imple- mentation of the Balfour Declar- .ation by the establishment of a Jewish Commonwealth in Pale- stine and hailing the establish- ment of a "free port" by Presi- dent Roosevelt for the tempor- ary shelter of refugees, were adopted here at the closing 'ses- sion of the 44th annual conven- tion of the Rabbinical Assembly of America, the central body of the Conservative rabbinate. The convention, which met at Camp Laxawaxen, also passed a resolution expressing gratification at the improved relations be- tween the Russian and American people. Memorial services were held for' Chaplain Henry Goody, a member of the Assembly, who perished when an army transport Was sunk in the Atlantic last October. Rabbi Robert Gordis of New York was elected president of the Assembly. Other officers elected were: Dr. Israel M. Gold- man, vice-president; Dr. Arthur H. Neulander, treasurer; Dr. Elias Charry, recording secre- tary; Dr. Herman Cohen, corres- ponding secretary. Dr. Louis Ginsberg, dean of American Tal-, mudists, and the outstanding scholar on the Talmud in the country, was honored during the War Chest Lists Radio Programs "Falling Stone," a neighbor- hood bouse story, will be broad- cast over radio station WWJ. at 1:45 p.m. Monday, July 10, instead of July 3, as originally announced. "Pint Size War," a day nurs- ery story, will be presented over the same station Monday, July 17, at 1:45 p.m. This will be the sixth in a 13-week War 'Town radio series which started on June 5. These stories are being broadcast to give an idea of the work being done by the agencies included in the Detroit War Chest. Starring in the July 17 broad- cast will be Conrad Nagel, Nancy Kelly, Michael Fitz- maurice, Vicki Vola and 11- year-old Jeanne Elkins. This story tells of a patriotic young mother with a child too young to go to school who gets a war plant job in a strange town. Mrs. Mildred Jeffrey, director of Women's Bureau of the War Policies Division UAW (Inter- national), will be the local speaker. Bnai David's Men's Club Installs Ross As New President Barney A. Ross was installed as president of the Bnai David Men's Club at a well attended meeting held June 22 in the Bnai David social hall. Myron Solomon was chairman of the evening.
