Rabbi Fra
Urges Reform
Judaism Now

Detroiter Addresses CCAR,
Says Masses Prepared
to Respond to It

. CINCINNATI, (Religious News
Service)—Addressing the annual
Convention of the Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis here
Rabbi Leon Fram of Detroit
recommended that practical steps
be taken toward popularizing
Reform Judaism and taking it to
the masses, which, he said, are
now psychologically prepared to
respond to it.
Such steps would be necessary,
Rabbi fram declared, if "Reform
Judaism is to be a Jewish relig-
ion and not merely a Jewish
sect; if it is to establish congre
gations among all groups of the
Jewish peop'le and especially if
it is to establish new congrega-
tions in the great cities of our
country where most of the Jew-
ish people live."
Refugee Rabbis Invited
Rabbi Jacob R. „Marcus, of He-
brew Union College, recommend-
ed that liberal rabbinical leaders
who are refugees from European
countries be invited to partici-
pate in work of the CCAR„
Many such leaders, he said, are
living in Australia, South Af-
rica, and. South America.
The CCAR Committee on Con-
temporary History and Literature
headed by Dr. Marcus asked the
Conference to write letters . of
thanks to - President Roosevelt
and leaders of other nations
which had given shelter to Jew-
ish refugees.
An American Institute for
Jewish Studies to stimulate se-
rious consideration of problems
confronting Jews in the light of
their religious heritage will be
inaugurated as a result of a
meeting here of the Commission
on Jewish Education of the
UAHC and the CCAR.
Speciat Literature
Special literature on the sub-
ject will be developed, according
to Dr. Emanuel Gamoran, •edu-
cational director for the UAHC.
To assist Jewish youth in gaining
appreciation of their religious
heritage the Institute, will •spon-
sor the publication of a work
dealing with present-day "He,
roes of justice," Dr. 'Gamoran
said.
