The ' appointment of Harold
Weiss as extension director for
the new unit to be operated by
the Jewish Community Center in
cooperation with the Detroit Sec-
tion of the National Council of
Jewish Women was announced
by H. C. Broder, president of the
Center.

Mr. Weiss, a native Detroiter,
is married and has an infant
son, Mark. He was educated in
local schools and at Wayne Uni-
versity from which he holds a
B.A. degree, having majored in
sociology. The degree of Master
of Social Work was granted him
in June, 1943, by the School of
Public Affairs and Social Work.

He has just returned to Detroit
to start :upon his new duties after
having served on the staff of the
Board of Guardians in
New York City. His functions in
that agency were in the field of
psychiatric case work in addition
to which. he was employed in the
Group Therapy Department --un-
der . S. R. SlaysOn. He also served
as a "counselor" in the Commun-
-, ity YMHA in Brownsville..
Was Case Worker
Previous taking the appoint-
ment- with the Jewish :Board . of
'Guardians, Mr. Weiss served on
the staff of . the Detroit Jewish
Social Service Bureau as case
worker, and he developed a liai-
son program between the Bureau
and the Wayne CountY .Juvenile
Court, . working closely with
Judge Healy, Inspector Johnson
and other officials.
He also participated in an ex-
perimental program supervised
by Prof. Fritz Redl of Wayne
University, in which- were com••
bined case work and group work

volunteer club leader of' the Jew-
ish Community .Center and a par-
ticipant in the campaigns of the
Detroit Community Fund, Red
Cross, and the • Allied Jewish
Carripaign. He is a member of the
American Association of Social
Workers and previously was as-
sociated with the Boys' . Work
Council.
"On the strength of this varied
background of education; training
and experience", states Mr. Brod-
er, Mr. Weiss seems particularly
well fitted for the manifold film-
tions involved in the management
of the Extension Program".
The extension unit, to which
Mr. Weiss comes as directOr, is
to be located in the TWelfth St.
Area as a service to the neigh -
bor and will be manned largely
by volunteer workers furnished
by the Council of Jewish Women,
under the direction of the Center.
Mr. Weiss can be reached at
the main office of the Center,
Woodward and Holbrook, Madi-
son 8400, where he is conferring
