"Proclaim liberty throughout the land,
unto all the inhabitants thereof.''—(Lev. XXV:10)
The enjoyment of our freedoms is symbolized in the
inscription on the Liberty Bell, taken from our Scriptures
as the Jewish people's contribution to the cause of liberty
. . . This inscription will remain a sacred guide for all
civilized peoples when this war ends in the triumph of
justice over tyranny . . . To guarantee this triumph, it is
our responsibility to make a success of the Fifth War
Loan. . . . Independence Day reminds us to redouble our
efforts for the bond drive.
The photograph on the upper left shows the jubila-
tion of the Italian Jews as they gathered in front of the
Synagogue of Rome on the occasion of the reopening of
the famous house of worship from which the Jewish
community had been barred by the Nazis for nine
months. The liberation of Jews everywhere is made
possible, on the one hand, through the relief efforts of
the United Jewish Appeal for Refugees, Overseas Needs
and Palestine; and on the larger front by the forces of
the United Nations.
