Samuel Zelby, formerly of 2911 Carter Ave., during an air battle with Japanese planes, this week was revealed by the government in awarding him posthumuously the Distinguished Flying Cross. S/Sgt. Zelby, an attorney be- fore he went into service on June 13, 1942, was a member of a B-24 bomber crew which received a direct hit, causing extensive damage, according to the government citation. "The crippled aircraft became the target of extensive attacks by hostile interceptors," the ci- tation continued, "then during the running battle these gunners shot down a Japanese fighter and repelled all others. "Then a forced. landing be- came inevitable on the water. The crew members did not sur- vive the crash. Their courage and devotion are worthy of the highest commendation." S/Sgt. Zelby, who earlier was awarded the Purple Heart, was declared missing on Feb. 17, last. He was 32 years old, born in Cleveland, Dec. 25, 1911. Warner Lost on Mission Staff Sgt. Lewis J. Warner, 26, husband of the former Shir- ley Siegel of 3378 Richton Ave., father of Samuel, 16 months old, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Warshawsky of 3777 Clements, is reported missing in action over Italy. He is a- bomber gunner. S/Sgt. Warner - failed to return from an April 17 mission. He first enlisted as an RCAF avia- tion cadet and was discharged in November, 1941, following an accident. He enlisted in the AAF on July 8, 1942, a month after being married. He has been over- seas since last December. His brother, Edward Warner, 29, is a first mate in the Mer- chant Marine. * * * PVT.
