PALESTINE

Five co-operative groups of discharged
servicemen and special policemen, including
a group named for the late Major General
Orde Charles Wingate, will be settled on the
land by special arrangement between the
Keren Kayemeth, Jewish National Fund, and
the Markez Haklai, Agricultural Department
of the Histadruth, Jewish Federation of Labor.
This is part of an extensive program for the
'settlement of Jewish veterans, including non-
Palestinians.
Discharged servicemen and their families
Should be given priority when applying for
employment with the security forces, the
executive of the Histadruth, Jewish Federa-
tion of Labor, declared in formally approving
the recognized policy of -IV Histadruth in
this matter.

launched in Haifa by the • Hapoel, Labor
Sports Organization, on the organization's
25th anniversary.
Over 20,000 pilgrims, including hundreds of

first day of Shevuoth. Many also visited the
Tomb of David on Mount Zion.
The Council of Mapai, Jewish Palestine's
Labor. Party, took the position that Group B,
an opposition group within its r a n k s , had
"established a separate party and withdrawn
from Mapai" when it decided at a recent
rally in Tel Aviv to nominate its own slate
of candidates for the forthcoming elections to
the Assephath Hailiveharim, Jewish Federa-
tion of Labor.

AMERICA

A speeding up in the process of making al-
cohol is the result of the method of "re-use
of yeast" introduced to Canadian alcohol
manufacturing plants by M. M. Rosten, an en-
gineer from Poland. By Rosten's method, live
yeast cells, separated from the fermented mass
of yeast, regenerate themselves and full grown
yeast is ,obtained for fermentation. Twenty
hours are required for fermentation by this
method, against seventy to ninety hours
needed under the older sulphite liquor fer-
mentation process.
Erie M. Heilbronn, 20-year-old-son of a
Rabbi, who in 1939 came to America as a ref-
, ugee, was killed in action' as a private in the
United States Army somewhere in Italy. The
Purple Heart medal awarded to him posthu-
mously was sent to his m.other. His father
died over a year ago. _-

William M. Leiserson, economist and Lormer
secretary of the National Labor Board of the
NRA, resigned as chairman of the National
(Railway) Mediation Board to accept a visit-

sity and write a book on labor relations.
President Roosevelt was described by for-
eign correspondent and columnist Edgar An-
sel Mowrer as supporting a number of Brit-
ish schemes for the Middle East, including the
partition of Palestine. Mowrer, back from a
trip to Palestine and the Middle East, said
that these schemes were hatched in Cairo to
make the Mediterranean "a 'ritish zone of
influence."
Declaring that in his opinion Father Cough-
lin "was out," and his political career finished,
Rev. Edward Lodge Curran, Jew-baiting head
of the International Catholic Truth Society
and formerly closely identified with the
Coughlinite movement, stated in a speech in.
New York that his own "diredt" followers
number in the "hundreds and hundreds of
thousands." /. . . Father Curran recently found-
ed a "national pommittee for the preservation
of Americanism against internationalism." He
said that since April 30,- when he made his
first speech enunciating the ,principles of his
"committee," his followers 'increased from
200 to 300 per . cent." He denied ever having,
had any connection or "official correspond-
ence" with the Detroit priest.

OVERSEAS

That all Hungarian- towns with populations
over 10,000 will be cleared of Jews within a
short period, is the proud boast of the Tester
Tag, a newspaper published, in Budapest, Hun-
gary's capital. /One hundred and fifty towns

newspaper reports.

the Polish Army, that super-human effort is

Orthodoic Rabbis' Head,
Rabbi Konvitz, Dead

BELMAR, N. J., (JTA)—Rabbi
Joseph Konvitz, president of the
Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the
U. S. and Canada, died at his
summer home here. He was 66
years old. Born if. Lithuania, Dr.
Konvitz came to the United
States in 1915. He served as
rabbi of several New Jersey con-
gregations, and became president
of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis
in 1933.
