N. Y. Times Hit for Method
of Handling Jewish News In Lighter Vein
Oswald Garrison Villard Condemns "Fear" Shown by Great
Newspaper in Dealing With Jewish Problems; Writes
In Praise of Jewish Daily Forward
Mae
American J e w s, especially
those who have evinced an in-
terest in the position taken by
the New York Times on Jewish
questions, will find a great deal
to interest them in Oswald Gar-
rison Villard's "The Disappear-
ing Daily," which has just been
published by Alfred A. Knopf
of New York.
One of the outstanding author-
ities on journalism in America,
hailing from a family of liberal
newspapermen whose activities
as newsmen dates .back 125
years, Mr. Villard writes criti-
cally of the press in- general and
is, in the main, deeply disap-
pointed over the decline of lib-
eral thought.
Consistent Viewpoint
It may well be said that some
of his criticisms apply to him,
also, particularly when he dis-
approves of one-sidedness and
prejudices. As an avowed paci-
fist who is opposed to all wars -
- a consistent viewpoint f o r
which this reviewer respects him
—Mr. Villard often condemns
some newspapers simply because
they follow the aggressive line
in dealing with Nazism and the
war on Germany.
But aside from thiS criticism,
this reviewer convincedly be-
lieves that Mr. Villard's "The
Disappearing Daily" is one of

Distribution Committee, which is
carrying on an extensive pro-
gram of aid to refugees- in

and Allied countries with funds
raised by the United Jewish
Appeal for Refugees, 'Overseas
Needs and Palestine.
The JDC major • American
agency for aid to Jews over-
seas, has allocated $1,840,000 for
aid to refugees in Switzerland
in 1944.
• The great majority of the ref-
ugees from Yugoslavia are in
camps maintained by the Swiss
Government but receive supple-
mentary assistance from the
J oint Distribution Committee
Swiss Committee. In addtiion to
the Yugoslavian refugees, 18,000
of the 25,000 Jewish refugees
from Germany, Austria, France,
Italy and other Axis-dominated
countries, also receive food,
shelter, clothing and medical
care from the JDC's.
800 Million for UNRRA
Requested By Roosevelt
WASHINGTON (JPS)—Presi-
dent Roosevelt asked Congress
for an advance of $800,000,000 on
the U. S. pledge to contribute
$1,340,000,000 toward the work
of the UNRRA (United NatiOns
Relief and Rehabilitation Admin-
istration). The advance would be
used to set in motion the UNRRA
machinery, before commencing
actual relief work. In addition,
President Roosevelt asked auth-
ority to transfer to to UNRRA
$350,000,000 worth of lend-lease
suopliea, services and funds.

Possible Explanation
Describing the way Ochs'
management is handling matters
relating to JeWs in the New
York . Times, Mr. Villard calls it
highly regrettable that the only
possible explanation for the fear
of publishing such copy is that
"its Jewish- ownership will be
held against it more frequently
if it becomes a vigorous defend-
er of the horribly ill-treated
Jewish ,people."
Quoting examples of news
played down in. the columns of
the • Times, Mr. Villard , states:
"Actually one tars it often said
that the N.Y. Times is both anti-
Semitic and pro-Catholic! If
there ever was a case where
the Times should have risen su-
perior • to fear of consequences
it is this. For never were human
beings more entitled to be de-
fended - and championed by a
great organ of public opinion;
certainly never have men and
women anywhere been • tortured
and slaughtered in such num-
bers with less reason."
As an example of Times pol-
icy on Jewish questions in the
days of Adolph Ochs, Mr. Vil-
lard recalls that this paper "re-
fused to print the British report
of the Polish pogroms against
the Jews except as paid adver-
tising."
Fascinating Story
An eight-page chapter in the
book, "The Forward — a Non-
Profit Making Daily," reviews
the rise of the Jewish. Daily
Forward under the editorship •of
Abraham Cahan. It is a fasci-
nating story and there are some
very interesting comments in it
on the activities of the pictur-
esque, 84-year-old Editor Cahan.
Referring to the Forward as "a
striking American newspaper in
the Yiddish language," Mr. Vil-
lard declares: "To multitudes
they have brought . hope and in-
spiration . and courage in times
that are the worst possible for
men and women of their faith.
And - these men who are giving
this unselfish, loyal service to
their people and to the country
are Jews."
Speaking of the need for "off-
setting the /commercialization of
the press," Mr. Villard writes
that "if . there were more jour-
nals like the Christian Science
Monitor, which is without -. the
profit motive because of its be-
ing sponsored by a religious or-
ganization, and if there could
be experimentation with English-
language dailies along the line
of the non-profit-Making Jewish
Forward, there would be a
marked advance."
Cites Negro Press
Mr.. Villard expresses the view
that "the vernacular daily Jew-
ish press deteriorates, and in the
long run will have to turn to the
use of English." He adds that
"only the Negro press has de-
veloped by leaps and bounds—
a most remarkable phenomenon,
with many of the editors show-
ing great ability and power."
Standardization, use of t h e
canned editorials anc, the comic
strips are among the faults of
modern newspapers that are
deeply resented by Mr. Villard
in his most interesting.. volume.
"The Disappearing Daily," which
should be widely read by all
who are concerned that this
country should have better and
more ideal newspapers.
