Thousands Flock
To Synagogues for
Invasion Prayers

A manifestation of spiritual unity with our
armed forces marked the flash of the historic news
that the invasion of Europe was an accomplished
fact.
Thousands of Detroit Jews flocked to the syna-
gogues on Tuesday evening and affirmed through
special prayers the spiritual kinship with our sons
and brothers who have plunged into the crucial
battle of the war for human freedom.
As part of the services, the following prayer was
recited during the special services:

,

"Lord of Hosts
"The word of the Psalmist echoes in our hearts, 'This
is the day for which we have waited.'
"Girded for battle against the blasphemers of Thy
name, a mighty host of freemen are resolved to crush the
ruthless oppressor who has darkened fair lands, looted
peoples, devastated communities, desecrated altars of
religion, tortured human beings and snuffed out millions
of innocent Hires.
"Today as our sons and the sons of our allies enter
upon the first act in the drama of liberation our prayers
go with them. Anxiety mingled with pride fills our hearts.
We know the cost may be heavy but we shrink not, for
the future of our children's children is at stake.
"Arise 0 Lord, and Let Thine enemies be scattered.
Bring victory to our armies, 0 Lord, embattled in
righteousness.
"Then speed the dawn of peace, 0 Father of Mercy.
May the reign of evil go up as the smoke and Thou alone
rule supreme over a family of nations dwelling in security
and in accord, with none to make them afraid. Amen."

What's the Cost of a
Wooden Star?

Every wooden Star of David (or cross) that marks the

grave of an American fighting man is paid for in full

with a gold star, a handful of bitter-sweet memories .

and an empty heart at home.

It's tough to die alone, far from your loved ones,

with the feel of metal that's biting out your life—but

some fighting man IS dying that miserable death RIGHT NOW, because

our country asks it of him.

When a Victory Volunteer asks you to double your bond buying

during the Fifth •War Loan, think of the cost of a wooden Star of David

or cross before you answer—think of the price some soldier—and his

family—is paying at that very instant. Then pledge every dollar you can.

Because you have an American heart—because it's YOUR country and

YOUR duty.

Saturday as. a day of prayer for the safety of our
armed forces. The call urges abstention from all
work on the Sabbath.

Jewish Community

War Bond Drive

The Jewish community of Detroit is fully
mobilized for participation in the Fifth War Loan

Spurred to increased efforts by the invasion of
Western Europe Tuesday morning, leaders in all
community groups are determined to 'oversubscribe
all set quotas in the pi-esent bond drive.
While synagogues, country clubs and communal
organizations will conduct individual drives for
large quotas, all groups will clear their campaign
results through Team 7 of the Wayne County Fifth
War Loan organization.
Team 7 again is headed by Henry Wineman
and Irving W. Blumberg. This team has accepted a
quota of $5,000,000, the largest on record for the Jew-
