MONTREAL, (JTA) — Attor-
ney-General Leon Casgrain of
the province of Quebec this week
assured a Jewish delegation that
the people of Quebec, irrespec-
tive of their racial or religiouS
affiliations,iare aroused at the at-
tempt by vandals recently to „set
afire the new synagogue in
Quebec City a few hours before
its dedication.
"Neither the civil nor the re-
ligious authorities can counte-
nance such acts, and as soon as
the guilty partie sare apprehend-
ed, they will be prosecuted ac-
cording to the law," the Attor-
ney-General said. Police will
continue to guard the synagogue
building, he said.
The Rev. Dr. C. E. Silcox, di-
rector of the Canadian Confer-
ence of Christians and Jews, de-
clared that the incident "gives
additional proof that Hitler has
too many* disciples right here in
Canada."
It was announced that Congre-
gation Bet1-. Israel Ohev Sholem
built the synagogue, has
raised $42,000 to repair damages
resulting from the fire. The con-

been fought by Quebec munici-

Jewish Aldermen Are Back
on City Council After
Protesting Mayor „

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Jewish
members of the Jerusalem mu-
nicipality resumed their seats in
the municipal council, which
they left two weeks ago in pro-
test against an anti-Jewish
speech delivered by the mayor
of Jerusalem, Mustafa Bey
Khalidi, at a conference of Arab
mayors in Palestine at which
resolutions against Jewish immi-
gration were adopted.
The return of the Jewish al-
dermen to the council came after
the Palestine Government,
through District . Commissioner
Newton, settled the dispute be-
tween the Jewish councillors and
the Arab mayor. The British
official appealed to both the
Jews and the Arabs for con-
tinued co-operation emphasizing
that this was especially essential
in view of the launching by the
Palestine Government of prelim-
inary measures for postwar de-
yelopment of the country.

Conference Plans
Delegation to Act
At Peace Talks

NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
American Jewish Conference
this week announced that a. its
forthcoming sessions, which will
take place in September in Chi-
cago, a delegation will be chosen
to act for the Conference in the
eventual peace negotiations. The
delegation will be given respon-
sibilities in order that the Con-
ference may be prepared in time
to exe....cise a direct influenc-. , . at
the peace table.
Announcement to this effect
was made by Louis Lipsky in his
capacity as chairman of the Ad-
ministrative Committee of the
Conference. The announcement
added that "the Conference left
many things undone and uncon-
sidered, but what was obscure in
September, 1943, however, will
be much clearer in September,
1944."
"The past 10 months," the
statement said, "have revealed
not only an abnormal growth of
parallel authorities and agencies
in American Jewish life, but the
development of rivalries and
cross currents that have shocked
and distressed the community;
mutuality and co-ordination
among the affiliated organiza-
tions, which had to be adjusted
if the Conference was to fulfill
its purposes, was not achieved in
any adequate measure."
