The Eyes That Are Watching You

By PHILIP SLOMOVII7

AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE
STRUGGLE FOR DEMOCRACY
Rear Admiral Charles S. Stephenson,
MC, .USN,‘ former head of the . U. S.
Typhus Commission, having learned to
admire the work of Hadassah as a result
of his-tour ont only of the Hadassah hos-.
pitals but ALL of Palestine, delivered a
radio address. in which he told "my fel--
low Americans of the truly .great mir-
acle which is happening there."
Rear Admiral Stephenson made a very
interesting point when he stated that "to
those of us who believe that the fight
on the health front is an integral part
of the struggle for democracy, the ex-
istence of such an institution 6,000 miles
from our shoreS, is not merely a subject
for picturesque comment. It is also of
concrete importance to EVERY mother,
EVERY father, EVERY relative of EV,
ERY ,fighting man and woman in the
Middle East."
;Why did he make such a "broad and
unqualified statement"? He explains it:
"As a specialist in the preventive
health field—as one who has' had long
experience in the medical corps of the
- United States Navy—I have learned for
a certainty that disease respects no fron-
tiers. Every Army and Navy man knows
that the existence of typhus in a land
thousands of miles from our shores is a
menace to every mother's son of us, right
here in this country. Tuberculosis and
its concomitant economic chaos must al-
so be viewed as a problem for American
parents, too. Cholera; dysentery and
similar illnesseS are just as virulent ene-
mies of our way of life as are "fifth col-
umnists' in the political- field. The rava-
ges of these enemies are so deadly, so
universally hazardous that the demgcra-
tic forces of the world must unite, for
their own safety, to exterminate them,
NOW and AFTER the war."

APPLY IT TO-THE MIND
This is a most interesting, statement..
It is significant because it -proves _the
contentions of President ROosevelt and
other leaders of the United Nations that
if men are to be free, the entire world
must be made free. As long as there
are oppressed groups anywhere, their -
serfdom will poison other areas and will
affect the security of men and women
everywhere. -
Rear Admiral-Stephensonts statement
is applicable to the human,. Mind. As
long as some people think in terms of
robbing the'other of his rights,,
the world is -not safe.
.
You can gci : a step farther: as long as
there are peopte :who :Win deprive oth,
ers of a home,- the world is insecure.
Call it Zionism; if yOu wish. Rear Ad-
miral Stephenson had no hesitation. in
speaking, in his greetings . to the H:a--
dassah women of - America; ''of his "con::
viction that the work their. are cfoing'for
the people of the Jewish,National Horne
must inevitably.. have _':'reverberations
RIGHT HERE, IN 'THEIR OWN. BACK
YARDS, in • the fOrrixi of • better • general
health, more good will, and greater ,un-
derstanding between nation_s and : men."
Yes, apply this erninent man's views'
to the human mind and 'you have a par-
allel to his health views in _tilt rela-
tionships of man to man: The world will
be free when all men are •free. There
will be justice on earth when ALL men,
including Jews, Have national homes.
Until that time, we can all fear for the
security of our children.

Lionel Wigram was recently: killed 'in
action in Italy and the British Press has
extolled this gallant young British of- •
ficer.
After Dunkirk he Proposed. an entirely
new system of training British • soldiers
which he - put into print in a book on•

ficial military sanction. One lea:ding . ar-
ticle in a London newspaper says, "A
new system of training was introduded

could see that the names of twelve
matchless victories were being written
in those harsh schools of discipline and
preparation. All who passed through
them were suffused .,with a new faith."
Major Lionel Wigram teas a thirty-seven

the Evening Standard wrote: "He revo-.-

The eyes of our-enemies are watching our home front. Looking for
some crack in our armor. The, little sharp eyes of the Japanese war
lords. The cold hard eyes Of the Nazis.
They've seen—.with consternation—what our front-line forces can
do. But maybe our home front isn't so tough. Maybe we think the war's
about over. Maybe we won't back up our armed forces.
The Fifth War Loan is here. What it means to the Japs and the
Nazis depends on what it means to us here at home.
The eyes of the Japs, the eyes of the Nazis, are watching you. And
the eyes of our boys at the front are on you, too.. Buy bonds, this time,
with every resource you can muster.

REMEMBER THIS
Something to remember about Henry
H. Klein, Jew-baiting counsel for Eugene
Sanctuary at the sedition•trial i in Wash-
ington, who introduced his anti-Semitic
tirade with the statement- "I am a Jew
myself': He was never recognized as a
Jew until that day in court . . . We pre-
dict that he may soon need, a defense
attorney himself.
Fr. _Charles E. Coughlin, who is sup-

This order is -open, only to men in rriili-

Why doesn't somebody protest t h e
radio program of the Church of the
Covenant of Dayton, 0.? One of 'its
prindipal broadcasters is Millard Joseph
Flenner;who fulminated in support of
the White Paper the other day . . . In
another broadcast he 'said: "The main
issue of our day is not the winning_of
the war, nor the winning of the peace
. . . The main- issue facing us is the des-
truction of the hidden hand which has
used gold to take peace from the earth,
and - hath given us depressions, bank
failures, broken homes and the evil of
its adulterous cup . . . The hidden hand
of the schemers began to show up in then

The Foe Braves Us

•
By GUSTAV DAVIDSON
'Tis said, "They know not what they do";
"Revenge is God's" (they say that too)
But if we pity them anew
We shall not, to ourselves, be true.
Though many a life we yet. shall rue
Let us be thankful that we knew
How grim the task—and saw it through -
And to ourselves continued true.

The 'foe still braves 'us to ptirsue

Him to a 'second Waterloo
We dare not fail that rendezvous "
Lea to ourselves we are not true.
