Time Apoligizes
For Error on Hagana
NEW YORK (JPS)—Admitting
a !'gross error" in referring to the
Hagana, Jewish Palestine's self-
defense movement, as "dread
Hagana," and in ascribing to it
the recent acts of terror in Pales-
tine, Time, the news-magazine,
wrote to J. L. Teller, editor of
the Independent Jewish Press
Service, expressing "distress"
over the mistake.
Replying for Time, Lois Simp-
son stated: "As you will under-
stand, we are distressed that this
slipped through because so much
credit and honor is due to the
Hagana. . . . You may be certain
that all our editors are now pretty
thoroughly conversant with the
difference between the Hagana-
which is respected by Jews, Brit-
ish, and Arabs 'alike—and the
.Irgun Zvai Leumi, whose off-
shoot, the Stern group, , was re-
sponsible for the violences we
reported."

Jews Can Beat
Arabs, Mowrer Says
NEW YORK (JPS)—That the
British have a new partition plan
for Palestine; in the trouble
ahead they will ask "the U. S. to
step in and help settle it," and in
"an open fight" with the Jews
"the Arabs would • be worsted,"
are some of the impressions gain-
ed - by Edgar Ansel Mowrer, U.. S:
correspondent, after' his recent
Palestine visit and told in.a cable
frbm Cairo.
"The latest British notion is .a.
new, definitive partition of Pal-
eStine—Jews roughly one-third,
Arabs two-thirds, according to
the _present population. . the
British say that if the Americans
don't like the partition scheme
and want to allow the Jews to
rule, Palestine, the Americans
must take co-responsibility in
making the anti-Arab plan tick,"
Mowrer says.

Beveridge Supports
Jewish Homeland Claims
LONDON ,(TD. S-Palcor) -- En-
dorsement of Jewish statehood
in Palestine was voiced by Sir
William Beveridge, father of the
Beveridge ,,Plan for "security
from the cradle to the grave," at
a reception in his Mayfair resi-
dence in connection with the
Kisch Memorial Committee seek-
ing to raise funds for the estab-
lishment of a colony in Palestine
on -Jewish National Fund land.
Stating that the Jewish problem
was a world problem, he warned'
that "the war will have been in
vain if this one problem 4:is not
comprehensively settled."

• A brilliant career in the field
of pharmacy for returning serv-
icemen has been assured this
week by Nate S. Shapero, L.L.D.,
president of the Cunningham
Drug Stores,' Inc., who an-
nounced that free scholarships
will be given to those who are
high school graduates and are
eligible to attend college.

" JERUSALEM (JPS-Palcor) — The decision to postpone
-the White Paper deadline on Jewish immigration. into Pales-
tine "was probably in - some measure influenced by the repre-
sentations of the U. S. government," it was declared here by
-Moshe Shertok, chief of the Political Department of the JeW-
ish Agency, in what was the first semi-official confirmation

of rumors long current that the
last-minute .deferment of the
planned ban was brought about
by U. S. influence.
He also announced that the
Jewish Agency in London was
pressing for the formation of a
Jewish' fighting force to partici-
pate in the liberation of Europe.
Addressing the Smaller Actions
Committee of • the World Zionist
Organization, Mr. Shertok refer-
red to earlier expressions by
himself and otherS that decisive
revision of policy on Palestine
.was imminent.
"At the time," he said, '"the
impression was justified," but
subsequent developments result-
ed in official acceptance by Brit-
ish circles of advice against an
early settlement of the Palestine
question. This does not mean
that the question "has been
shelved," he said.

"Cunningham Plan Pharmacy
Scholarships are not, in a strict
sense, new with us," Mr. Shapero
said. "For years we have main-
tained 32 scholarships at Wayne
University and the Detroit In-
stitute of Technology for our
own employes.
"The Cunningham Scholarship
Plan, and those others which we
know will duplicate its broad
objective in other fields, are a
debt we owe to the young men
and women whose careers have
been interrupted by war. It is
to them we must look for the_,
ambition, the knowledge, the
performance that m ake for
achievement, and for the respon-
sibilities that will come with
leadership in a world at peace
again. Helping them equip them-
selves for the task is the least
we can do."
