I just plugged along." . But after
40 years of spare time painting,
Friedman has definitely arrived.
In 1940 the Metropolitan Mu-
seum of Art purchased an oil
painting, "Unemployable." Fried-
man's work is also included in
the Museum of Mddern Art, in
the Newark Museum and in the
Phillips Memorial Gallery in
Washington. His latest one-man
show was held in April of this
year at the Marquie Gallery in
New York.
Clement Greenberg, writing in
the Nation of April 15, has this
to say: "By and large, Friedman's
painting is praiseworthy for its
honesty, for its renunciation of
tricks and stunts—it is obvious
that he has the equipment to
paint as fashionably as anyone on
the market, but it is also obvious
that he has character."
The Friedman show at the
Jewish Community Center is be-
ing sponsored by a group of
friends and will be hung in the
Adult Lounge. The show will
open on the evening of Thursday,
June 1 and the public is invited
to attend.

Oils, watercolors, pastels and
lithographs, representing t h e
work of Arnold Friedman, will
be exhibited at the Jewish Com-
munity Center, Woodward at
Holbrook, from June 1 through
June 21.
Friedman is a versatile artist
and has been termed a primitive
by some. He is a retired postal
clerk and has been a spare-time
painter for 40 years. As a boy
he used to sketch in a "haphaz-
ard sort of way." Later he went
to art class, studying under
Robert Henri. George Bellows,
Rockwell Kent and Guy Pene
Du Bois were fellow students.
He recalls that he never had
encouragement from anyone. "No
