GHASTLY BUT TRUE .

A young man who is Jewish, but
doesn't look it, called at the Polish Con-
sulate in New York not long ago . . . The
visitor was handed over to, a Consulate
official who treated him most courteous-
ly . . . And when the caller's business
waS finished the official escorted him to
the door, and assured him that there
was nothing to worry about .. "All is
not as bad as it seems in Poland," said
the representative of a government that
denies anti-Jewish bias . .. "The Ger-
mans are killing out all the Jews for us,
so we'll have a pretty damn good coun-
try when we go back" . . . This story is
told by Martha Chase, a reliable young
lady . . PM published it as a Letter to
the Editor . . . It tells more about the
Polish government's attitude toward
Jews than do all the editorials in all the
newspapers.

INSIDE EUROPE

Nazi storm troopers patrolling Am
sterdam streets recently were horrified
to see displayed, in a shop window, a
large poster carrying a Biblical quota-
tion: "Hide the outcasts; betray not him
that wandereth" . . . The storm troopers
recognized the reference to the • good
Dutch custom of hiding Jews and keep-
ing them out of the Gestapo's clutches
... So many thousands of Jews are be-
ing thus protected in Holland that the
Nazis stayed up . nights figurine out
schemes to get• hold of them ... Finally
they came up with an announcement
'that a thousand Dutch Jews were to be
sent to America as part of a prisoner-
Of-war exchange agreement . . . This
was a hoax, of course—but some scores
Of Jews fell for it and, in compliance
with directions, reported to Gestapo
headquarters . . . And there, as you've
guessed, they found one-way tickets" to
Poland waiting for them.

YOU SHOULD KNOW

. Have you noticed that the drive
against Zionism is hitting on all cylin-
ders on Capital Hill, in the churches
and in big-circulation magazines? .
The campaign is well r organized, and
only at its beginning . . . Its sponsors,
we're informed, are British government
emissaries and American oil interests.

- Lt: H. J. Berkowitz, U. S. Navy chap-
lain, delivered an inspiring memorial
address on :the late Secretary of the
Navy Frank Knox at the U. S. Naval
Training Center at Sampson, N.- Y.1.
Chaplain BerkoWitz recalled that Knox
was a tremendous force in the effort to
eliminate racial and religious prejUdice
M the Navy . . . That is true • . To a
naval officer charged with anti-Semitic
bias Knox once said: "An anti-Semite
cannot be a good officer- . . You'll have
to make your Choice as to which of:
two you want to be."

Quotation of the Week

Here is one of the chief Jewish quarrels with the White Paper.
According to the Jews, the White Paper prevents them from coloniz-
ing vast . rocky - hillsides, which, according to them, the Arab never
•could and never will• cultivate ; but which Zionist brains and Zionist
passion can, if allowed, transform into gardens.
Jewish performance to date seems to justify this contention for it
almost seems that the rockier, the more barren, the hotter, the' sandier
the plot of settlement ground chosen, the more passionately do the
Jewish colonists throw themselves into the task of reclaiming it.
According to British, administrators and foreign diPlomatsi no job
is too tough to be tackled by these people. They not only raise good
citrus fruits. No, they must raise the best oraRges, lemoris, grapefruits
to grow: anywhere. They not only have hospitals, a scientific institute
and a university, but these must be a model for the world—and are.
In the wild joy of creating a new society against all obstacles, Pales-
tinian Jews remind the traveler irresistibly of the CoMmunist enthu-
siasts who, in a series of five-year plans, did so much to transform.
backward Russia.

WHAT MAKES AN ERSATZ.
ARYAN TICK?

When' friends of sedition defense at-
torney Henry H. Klein disclaimed that
he was Jewish, thiS colUmnist reported
it with glee. It seemed incredible in the
first place, that the attorney who had
so closely identified' himself with the
views and pet hates of 'his 'clients would
be Jewish. We are now told that we
were wrong; and to prove hiS contention
one of our readers quotes from page 11
of defense attorney Henry H. Klein's
own book, "MT-- Last Fifty Years," an
autobiographical history, New- York,
1935, in which the friend of Col. Sanctu-
ary and other Jew-baiters writes of
himself: "When I arrived at 13 years
of age, I was confirmed like other boys
of Jewish parents. I studied Hebrew
one year, to be able to go through the
required ceremonies . . . My Bar _Mitz-
vah party consisted of five boys besides
myself • . . " What made Klein what
he is? What is this strange impulse that
drives a man to associate with, and
cater to the men who hate him most?
What makes a man hate himself?

_ NOTS ON - CAPTIVITY.
Tuvia Greenberg, one of Jewish Pal-
estine's volunteers with the British
forces, recently returned to Palestine in
an exchange of prisoners after three
years of captivity, tells of the Nazis:
standing at attention• and saluting when
Jewish captives sang Hatikvah at a
Hanukah celebration in a German
prison camp. It wasn't that the Nazis
were motivated by Courtesy . . . The
Jews had received parcels from the Red
Cross and 'the Nazis, wanting to partake
of them, knew that they had -better pay
the Jews proper respect . . . At first the
Nazis , ..forbade the distribution of Red
Cross gift packages among : the Jews and
seized them . . • Howevtr, when the
'Pommies said that they wouldn't have
any • either if- the Jews were not per-
, mated to have theirs, the Nazis. re-
canted . . . Jewish Palestine's volunteers
refused to admit to a knowledge of Ger-
man, a language spoken by a large num-
ber. of them, although it :would have
provided' them with berths as interpret_
ers and entailed special :privileges .
Tuvia Greenberg is a religious youth.
Friday nights he' would; recite the Kid-
duph, and his Australian and British
comrades would loudly answer: Amen
. . . He makes it quite clear, however,.
that the Nazis treated' him- well because
of his British. uniform. The same Was
true 'of Jewish service men. from the
U. S. Soviet Jewish 'soldiers were not
as fortunate.

Don't think that Zionist political ac-
tivities in. America have come to a stand-
still- . . . The reason ybu now read less
about these activities is because res-
ponsible leaders in this country consider
it wiser to do their work in a quiet
way . • . They still have to overcome
many 'influential fdrces in Washington
who . are conduCting pro-Arab -propa-
ganda in a subtle but very efficient
manner .. .It must be admitted that. the
persons behind this propaganda are
achieving greater results than they ever
expected .. . This makes the job of the'
American Zionist political leaders even
more difficult, since they have no direct
access to the proper military authorities
and are, therefore, not in a position to
effectively refute the pro-Arab argu-
ments . .. In view of this situation, the
American Zionist Emergericy Council
is keeping busy to 'such an extent that
its staff may not even be able to' take
its summer vacation. .
By the way, did you know that in a
poll taken in Palestine after the last
war, about 70 percent of the people
wanted the United States to become the
mandatory power?

BEHIND 'THE' SCENES -
The World Jewish Congress is seem-
ingly in need of 'a good detective . . .
We are told that a document which the
Congress had in its confidential files,
suddenly. - turned up 'in a Yiddish news-
-paper, in New York' . . How this hap-
pened is a puzzle which officials of the
Congress are trying 'to solve . . . The
document deals with the situation of the
Jews in occupied Poland ' and throws
light on what is in store for Jews in
Poland after the war . . . It does not
place the Polish •- Government-in-Exile
in a very good light .. . This document
reached the World' Jewish • Congress" sev-
eral months ago and few knew of its
contents. •-
The American Jewish Committee • is
certainly -extending its activities with
unprecedented vigor . . . Not only is the
ComMittee bent on organizing groups
throughout the -country, but - it will soon
establish an office in Washington . . .
Judge Joseph;. M. Proskauer, the Com-
mittee's. president, may be received by
President Roosevelt any •daY, now that
the President has recuperated and is..
back in Washington . . . We understand.
that the' State Department has formally
notified the American 'Jewish Commit-
tee that Atherican Jews will be affected
by the 'White paper just as Jews of any
other : nationality . . this means that

THE 5-YEAR-OLD "LION"
. • Your: Commentator remains under the

spell of the touching story about the
five-year-old youngster—one of the ref-
ugees who arrived in -Palestine a few
,days ago—who lived alone in a forest for
30 months. '
His_ parents, our readers- will recall,
were sent_to a .• death camp.' The young-
ster, •who only remembers that his name
is Libele, was nicknamed "Tarzan" and
"Little Lion."
He refused to touch food and insisted
upon 'eating. grass, the only - thing that
sustained'hirn throughout the 30 months
he was in' hiding. It took time to teach
him the value of ordinary food.
Some one ought to write a play based
on this story. The tale of such martyr-
dom should. teach . our people, and our
neighbors,, to abandon controversial dis-
cussions and to' think only in terms of
rescuing those who can' be saved.
It should teach those who enter into
"political discussions" the important role
of Palestine in the rescue program.
Those who are frightened by the politi-
cal . considerations of the Zionist move-
ment should recognize the reality of a
situation which makes Palestine the
foremost place of refuge for the dispos-
sessed and disinherited. They should
recognize the fact. that without political
guarantees the Valtie of Palestine as a
home for the homeless may be lost.
"Tarzan" the "Little Lion" has a lesson
for our time—and for all time 'to come.

THE CHRISTADELPHIAN "TORAH"

- On several occasions, this column dis-
cuSsed the interest that the Christadel-
phians show in the Bible, Jewish history,
the rebuilding of Palestine and other
Matters with relation to Jews:
. A recent : issue • of "The- Dawn," the
,Official organ of the ' Christadelphians,
published a photograph of a Scroll of
the Law, over the deScriptive heading
s"Hebrew. Book of the Torah or Law, with
the explanation that "the complete col-
umn of the text seen above contains
the 'Song of Moses' (Exodus 15)."
Here was an inspiration for us to read
again the "Oz Yoshir Moshe" in the orig-
inal, from a reproduced Scroll appearing
in a Christian 'periodical. But your. Com-
mentator soon discovered that the pic-
ture of. the Scroll was printed upside
down. -
It is pleasing to know, however, that
at heart the Christadelphians - are among
the great loyers of and staunch adher-
ents to the teachings of the Torah.

What is in store for mankind?
• I believe that out of this war will
Conde a 'sounder understanding, of ,how
international relations must be ordered
so' as to avoid another war in our time.
I. believe that Democracy will experi-
ence a new lease _ of. -life, having proved
itself capable of winning wars_ as well as
Malang life - mOre liveable in peace.
I believe that science and -invention
will, enable the human race to attain _ a
more abundant. life than it has ever
known before and that the rehabilitation
of the badkward parts of the globe will
be speeded Up.
: Lbelieve that ,Religion which has come

creasing support as it broadenS its , ob-
jectives and democratizes its institutions.
_ I believe that the United States and

tions • in this country, after a possible in-
terval of postwar reactionism, 'will re-
cede into the limbo.
I believe that one of the touchstones of
the. better society of the future- will be
the treatment: which will be accorded
the Jewish people, wherever they dwell.
Because I have faith in mankind's prog-
ress, _I have faith in the future of the
Jew.
I believe that the preservation of the
Jewish people is not only essential from
the standpoint of Jewish dignity arid
self-respect, but essential from the stand-
pOint of human progress, for the Jew
will continue to be in the future as he
has been in the past, a spiritual leaven
in human affairs..
•
I believe that there \ will be a Jewish
