A cast of 200 Detroiters will participate in Johann

Strauss' comic opera, `!The Gypsy - Baron," on May 31, ac-
cording to Julius Chajes, artistic director of the Detroit
Frtitrids of Opera, Inc.
The choir will consist of members of the Catholic Youth
Organization Chorus, the Glee Clubs of Central and North-

Western high schools, and of
Ford and Chrysler workers.
The supers will come from the
Hungarian section in their orig-
inal costumes.
Special Adaptation
Dr. Lothar Wallerstein, eminent
stage director of the Metropolitan
Otitro Co., formerly of the Salz-
, burg ' Festivals, and the Vienna
State Opera, has made a special
adaptation of the opera, which
will be presented for the • first
time in this new version.
The soloists also are drawn
from the city's leading churches
and temples. The orchestra will
consist of members of the Detroit
`Symphony Orchestra. The entire
-opera will be given in English,
with a new translation made es-
pecially for this performance by
Ruth and Thomas Martin, well-
known translators for the Metro-
politan in New York.

Considerable interest is being
shown in the concert of the
Jewish Folk Chorus, directed by
Henri Goldberg, to. be presented
in the Scottish Rite Cathedral of
the Masonic Temple on June 18.
'The featured artist • will be
Regina Resnik, dramatic soprano,
"Ole only woman winner" of the.
1944 Metropolitan Opera Audi-
tions of the Air.
Now a .member of the Metro-
pOlitan Opera Co., Miss Resnik 3
a :native New Yorker, began her
career singing Gilbert and Sulli-
van operettas in New York high
schools. In 1942 she received her
music degree at Hunter College
and made her debut in the
Brooklyn Academy of Mtisic.
Her performance' as "Lady
Macbeth" for the New' Opera
Co. won her an invitation to
sing "Leonore in Fidelio (Bee-
thoven)" and "Micaela in Car-
men" with the "Opera Nacibnal
in Mexico" under the renowned
conductor Erich Kleiber. She
toured the Midwest and South-
west and appeared with • the New
York City Center Opera Co. the
beginning of this season and will
make her appearance with that
company this month.

Symphony Summer Twilight
Series to Open June 2I

An eight-concert Summer
Twilight Series and an expanded
winter season for the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra were ' an-
nounced by Henry H. Reichhold,
president of the Symphony board
of -directors:
The first program will be
given on June 17 at the Univer-
sity of Detroit Stadium and there
will be a Wednesday and. Satur-
- day evening concert for a four-
•week period: 'Karl Krueger; mu-
sical director of this series, has
announced that - every program
and each soloist for the concerts
will be different. A special -stage
has • been .built, and the lighting
and acoustical engineers have
planned so that a capacity audi-
enee of 10,000 can .see and hear
from any part of the stadium.

tion has made this series possible
