Russian Emergency Kit Drive The Week's Best Stories

First of the Jewish organiza-
tions to participate in the drive
for Family Emergency Kits
sponsored by Russian War Re-
lief, Inc., the 13 branches of the
I. W. 0. Reading Circles this
week packed 500 of the kit car-
tons to go to Russian refugee
families.
Soap, dehydrated soup, knit-
ting needles and many other
items of household necessity
Vent into the kits, as specified
in the list compiled by Soviet
'authorities. Members of the
Reading Circles will attach a
personal message of sympathy
and good win to each box, ac-
cording to Mrs. Ida Estrin, secre-
tary of the organization.
Interest Growing
Interest in the kit campaign,
RWR's effort to help millions of
Russian families now returning
to their homes in the wake of
the Red Army, is growing daily.
Purchasing c o m m i t t ees are
now being set up by many other
Jewish organizations that have
guaranteed to fill a quota of kits.
The cartons, good-will labels,
and lists of contents are furnish-
ed by the local committee of
Russian War Relief, 202 Donovan
Building, Detroit, to any organi-
zation or individual desiring to
contribute articles for the cam-
paign. Further information may

hold its annual meeting and
election of officers May 10, at

Lord Halifax Makes
Statement on Palestine

In an interview in Ann Arbor
last week, after receiving the
honorary Doctor of Laws degree
at the University of Michigan,
Lord Halifax, British Ambassa-
dor to the U. S., made the fol-
lowing statement on Palestine:
"If you tried to take a short
cut and thrust in as many Jews

Cohen Appointed
To Community
Council's Staff

He received his social work
training in the Graduate School
for Jewish Social Work from
1933 to 1935. He has served on
the staff of Council Educational'
Alliance in Cleveland and was
also on the staff of the National
Refugee Service.

pointment of Abraham Cohen,
formerly of Detroit, to the Com-
munity Council staff, in the ca-

English speaking branches. He
came to Detroit from Brockton,
Mass., where he served as ex-
ecutive director of the Brockton
YM&YMHA Community Center.

Mr. Cohen had a thorough
Jewish education, and is well
oriented in the cultural and or-
ganizational problems of Jewish
life. He studied under Prof- Mor-
decia M. Kaplan and Salo W.
Baron who equipped him for
creative work in the field of
Jewish community organization.
He has had a long standing - in-
terest in the Jewish Community
Council movement.
