Union of American Hebrew
Congregation Answers
Houston Criticism

CINCINNATI (JPS)-Empha-
sizing the need to "nurture the
cohesive principle rather than
e divisive," the Union of
American Hebrew Congrega-
tions replied to a resolution of
criticism directed against it by
Congregation Beth Israel of
Houston, Tex.
The Houston Congregation had
criticized the UAHC for remain
ing in the Jewish Conference,
for employing Zionists in its in-
stitutions, for the character of its
extbooks and for using the
words "Liberal Judaism" to de-
note Reform Judaism.
The reply points out that "by
giving adequate publicity to our
position of 'neutrality, we. are en-
abled to remain in the Confer-
ence in order to participate in
other vital activities: Would any
fair-minded or loyal Jew expect
us to do otherwise?"
. In reply to the Congregation's
objection to the use of the word
"Liberal" the UAHC points out
that Isaac Mayer Wise, founder
of the Reform movement, had
stated that "Progressive Judaism
would be a better designation
than Reformed Judaism."
The reply also "unequivocally
rejects the suggestion that it
,..Nould employ or refuse to em-
ploy its professional workers on
the ground of either their anti-
Zionism or their Zionism." The
Union's publications are passed
on by a Committee whose chair-
man from 1923 to 1942 has been
Dr. David Philipson, "whose
leanings are far from national-
. istic."
The reply has been drawn up
by Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath,
director of the UAHC: Rabbi
Solomon B. Freehoff, president
of: the Central Conference of
Ainerican Rabbis; Lester A.
Jaffe, vice-chairman of the
Board of Governors of the He-
brew Union College; Adolph
Rosenberg, " president of the
UAHC, and Rabbi Abba Hillel
Silver, vice-president of the
Central Conference of American
Rabbis.

Research in Cancer
NEW YORK (JPS)-For re-
search relating to cancer, Dr.
Alexander Lipschutz, director of
the department of experimental
medicine of the 'Chilean-National
Health Service at Saritiago,
Chile, has received for the sec-
ond time the $2,000 award given

Professor Measures
The Minimum Flash

New York (JPS)-Dr. Selig
Hecht, professor of Biophysics
at Columbia University has
measured the smallest amount
of light capable of stimulating
the retina of the human eye.
Measurement of this least
amount of light has been the
subject of two years of experi-
mentation on the trained eyes
of seven skilled observers in Dr.
Hecht's laboratory. Dr. Hecht
measured the "minimum flash"
as representing an energy ex-
penditure of between two and
six ten billionths of an erg.

The Week's Best Stories

'low Josef Hofmann
Satisfied His Audiences

One night, after completing
the first half of a piano recital,
Josef Hofmann stepped back-
stage to rest during intermis-
sion. Upon returning to the stage
the pianist was stunned to find
the concert hall empty.
Did the audience fail to re-
turn because he had been so
bad? Impossible. He had dis-
tinctly heard their thunderous
applause. What was the answer?
.It turned out that programs had
not been distributed to the audi-
ence, and as a result they did
not know just how niuch music
to expect. So thoroughly had
they enjoyed the first half of
the recital, the music lovers felt
they had received their money's
worth and they got up and left.

The Mother Shapiro Story
A Jewish refugee was • placed

in a janatorial position in a con-
vent by a priest.
After three weeks, the Mother
Superior of the convent called
the priest and said he'd have to
find a new job for the refugee.
"His work is perfect," said the
Mother Superior, "though we do
have some trouble with his ig-
norance of our ways. He persists
in washing his face and hands in
the holy water,. and stacks his
broom and mop in the confes-
sional, but he's always so sorry
about these offenses, when I ex-
plain them to him, it's easy for
us to pardon him-but the man
is driVing me out of my mind.
He keeps calling me Mother Sha-
piro:"
