United Jewish Appeal Helps
Refugees to Enjoy Passover
Thousands in Europe, Palestine and the U. S. Observe
Feast Through Supplies and Cash Sent ‘to Russia,
Spain, Switzerland and Latin America
Many thousand refugees in European lands, Palestine
and. the United States have been helped to observe the feast
of Passover in accordance with the traditional Jewish ritual,
through funds provided by the United Jewish Appeal for
Refugees, Overseas Needs and Palestine. The nationwide
campaign of the United - Jewish Appeal is seeking to raise

Refugees recently escaped from
Nazi occupied territories cele-

in years as the guests of Jewish
Palestine in Tel Aviv, Haifa and
at t h e Athlith Immigrants'
Clearing Camp.
A seder conducted in Tel Aviv
under the auspices of Jewish
Palestine's Joint Committee for
the Relief of Polish Jews was at-
tended - by 200 refugees who ar-
rived from Teheran, Algiers and
on the Portuguese liner Nyassa.
Jews, officers and men, serving
in the Polish Army also attend-
ed. Seventy-five newcome r
from Turkey and the Balkans
observed the Passover at the
Haifa Jewish Agency Immigrant
hostels.
The 239 Jewish refugeeS . from
Rumania, who arrived in Pales-
tine the week before, conducted
their seder at the Athlith clear-
ance camp while awaiting release

Impressive Passover Seder
Held for 500 at Ft. Custer
An impressive Passover Seder
was held at Consolidated Mess
Hall in Fort Custer for 500 serv-
icemen and women stationed at
Fort Custer, Kellogg Field and
Percy Jones General Hospital.
Joining the gathering were
members- of the Battle Creek
community, the Kalamazoo com-
munity, wives and families of
soldiers. - The - Seder started at
sundown. The ceremony was
conducted by Chaplain Martin
M. Perley of Fort Custer and
Rabbi Randall M. Falk of Battle
Creek. The . Four Questions were
asked by Pvt. Albert Kopsow of
Philadelphia, who has just. turn-
ed 18 and is one of the youngest
soldiers at Fort Custer.
Assisting in the ceremony was
Pvt. Ben Basenko 'of New York,
a former member of the Yiddish
Art Theater, who acted as can-
tor.
The traditional search . for the
Afikomen was held with chil-
dren of Battle Creek residents
participating.

were carried on with army offi-
cials by . the Jewish Welfare
Board Army and Navy Commit- .

Active in the preparation of
the food for the large gathering
were Mrs. Jacob- Mehler, chair-
man of the Passover committee,
Mrs. Albert Harris, Mrs. Kate
Phillips, and Mrs. William Web-
er. Pvt: Harry Kirschenbaum,
head cook at the Percy Jones
General Hospital kitchen, was in
charge of the soldier detail
which assisted the women in
preparing the food.
The men who were on pass
were given home hospitality by
families in Kalamazoo, Detroit,
Grand Rapids and other cities in
Michigan by arrangement with
the -Jewish Welfare Board of-
fices of Battle Creek _and De-
troit.
, Second Seder Held
The second Seder was held at
a small mess hall on Saturday:

ing left for Detroit and Kala-
mazoo over the weekend. Chap-
lain Perley conducted the serv-
ice.

In the afternoon the Benton
Harbor group visited the Percy
Jones Hospital, bringing Pass-
over goodies. For the rest of the
week the Jewish Welfare Board
had open house at the USO Club
in Battle Creek, providing Pass-
over suppers to all desirous Of
participating. Jewish Welfare
Board Army and Navy Commit-
tees of South Haven and Kala-
mazoo co-operated in providing
Passover foods.
Packages of Passover food
have also been left with Chap-
lain Perley at Fort Custer for
all men who are unable to leaVe
the Fort and wish to observe the
Complete Passover.
