UMAN JEWS MASSACRED

MOSCOW (TYS)—All Uman
Jews were massacred by t h e
Nazis, according to dispatches
here from the Red Army on
that front.

Jewish - farmers in the United
States are making their contri-
bution on the food production
front according to the 43rd an-
nual report of ,,the Jewish Agri-
cultural Society, issued by Dr.
Gabriel Davidson, managing- di-
rector. The report deals with the
work of the Society to strengthen
and enlarge the AmeriCan Jewish
farm class. It also tells of Jewish
farmers' sons and daughters
"who are serving in every branch
of our combat forces."
The society guides Jews who
desire to go into farming. In the
past 10 years over 10,000 people
came to the Society for this ser-
vice, and 964 families were es-
tablished. Last year 771 sought
advice and 102 families, compris-
ing about 500 persons, were set-
tled on farms in six states.
Since its founding, the society
has granted 14,371 loans aggre-
gating $8,907,000 to Jewish farm-
ers in 40 states. Last year 227
loans were made to farmers in
12 states. This financial service
provides, a source of credit not
readily obtainable elsewhere.
Farm loans are made on smaller
margins or equity than are usual-
ly accepted by loaning agencies,
and their repayment is spread
over a term of years.
The society's agricultural ed-
ucation department maintains a
staff of agricultural experts who
bring to Jewish farmers agricult-
ural information on every con-
ceivable branch of farming. Dur-
ing 1943 these extension experts
made 3,134 visits, held 144 farm
meetings and demonstrations at-
tended by over 7,500 farmers. In
addition, advice and aid were
given to 2,429 who sought indi-
vidual consultation at the So-
ciety's office. .
The society's farm employment
department, the oldest special
ized farm employment agency in
the country, affords young Jews
the opportunity of • acquiring
agricultural training by actual
work on farms. Since its estab-
lishment • it has obtained farm em-
ployment for 19,669 young men.

The folowing details are related
in this connection:
"Wingate arrived in London,
on leave from his arduous cam-
paign in Burma. His wife was
in northern • Britain. Before he
could even change his clothes
he was ordered to proceed to
Quebec City_ to attend the con-
ference.
" 'Could I_ at least have 24
hours to see my wife?' Wingate
asked.
" 'No,' replied Churchill, 'the
matter is urgent You must leave
right away. But I'll tell you what
we :can 'do we'll bring her
along.'
"Mrs. Wingate was called and
told to proceed to a certain place
in the north immediately, not
even to wait to change her
things, and Scotland Yard men
took charge of her without indi-
cating what was happening. The
next thing she knew she was on
a plane headed across the ocean
for a rendezvous with her hus-
band at Quebec City."

history of the Samaritans, stress-

The Samaritan leaders, who

were receiving no schooling at

Scholar, linguist, courageous

Possessing a sense of justice
and having seen the fruits of
Jewish labors in Palestine, he
had become a staunch Zionist.
His wife and his mother-in-law
