UAW-CIO Opens

Union Bookstore

An entirely new approach . to
' the problem_ of education of
workers was initiated recently in
Detroit when the UAW-CIO
opened the Union Bookstore at
5021 Woodward Ave.
The Bookstore, operated by the
International Education Depart=
ment, endeavors to bring the -best
literature to union members at
the lowest possible prices. It is
maintained on a non-profit basis.
UAW members can receive dis-
counts on all books except those
prices fixed by law.
While primarily the store is
for UAW members, liberal groups
may take advantage of its fine
- stock of books dealing with var-
ied fields of interest. Jewish
readers will find books on race
and discrimination, Jewish his-
tory and literature, on the 'eco-
nomic and political problems of
war and peace, on history and
science, music and the fine arts,
besides progressive children's
books which are recommended
by liberal and qualified teachers'
societies throughout the U. S.
The store has the best selling
books, such as "Under Cover,"
"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" and
- b- "Forgotten Ally" by Pierre Van
Paassen.

City Victory Garden
Plots Available

Readers of The Jewish News
who want to raise a part of their
own food supply and do not
have a yard or a vacant lot may
request a City of Detroit Garden
Plot. They must mail their ap-
plications by Monday, April 10,
in order to be considered in the
first assignments.
The Department of Parks and
Recreation has individual plots
of 1,500 square feet available on
good soil which they will assign
to Detroit residents who request
them. These plots will be plow-
ed, disked, harrowed and staked
out into gardens measuring 50x
30 feet. A registration fee of $1
must be enclosed with the appli-
cation.
A receipt will be mailed to
the applicant and he will be as-
signed to the garden nearest his
home in which there are vacant
plots. Just as soon as the weath-
er permits he will be notified on

what day he should appear at
the garden to accept his plot.
The ground will be all prepared
so that he can put in his seeds
as soon as he takes over his
garden.

Requests should be mailed to
the Victory Garden Headquar-
ters, 504 Elmwood Ave., Detroit
7, Mich., and should contain the
following information: Name,
address, mailing zone number,
nearest -cross street, and number
in family. Checks or money or-
ders should be made out to Al-
bert E. Cobo, City Treasurer.
