An Epistle

Israel in tier Agony—To Britain ins. Her Power

By ABRAHAM CAPLAN

Britain! Do you remember the terror from the
skies,
Remember the fury of the Germans as they
rained flaming death
Upon your reeling cities? Surely you remember.
As against Sisera, in that far-off day of Deborah,
The very stars in their courses fought against
you.
Surely, Britain, you remember!

You who fight the wars, you who sail His
Majesty's ships—
You people of England who read devoutly the
Jewish scriptures
And deem yourselves descendants of the Lost
Ten Tribes—
This is what your adroit chiefs would tell you:

"The Nazi sword has ravaged half the Jews
of Europe.
A thousand years of Israel's agonizing
struggles
Have hurtled darkly into the abyss.
Cities made great by Jewish scholars and
men of arts
Will see no more the seed of Abraham.
Sad-eyed boys who meditated in the
Torah's laws
In schools and prayer halls, if they be

Britain! You well know the source of this- fury.
Your chiefs—they are not dull but wise
In their knowledge of Europe's malady. They
heard the overture
Of the devil's opera. They heard the crack
Of the Nazi whips as they flailed the backs Of
Jews.
But you, Britain, casually shrugged your shoul-
ders;
With the cool formality of your statesmen's
acquiescence,
With the unblinking proprieties in which di-
plomacy is couched,
You bargained with Satan and Satan won the
day.
Surely, Britain, you remember.

living,

Will haunt the fastnesses of forests
Like the ravenous beasts which roam
therein.
Half the Jews of Europe by Nazi hangmen
slain,
The other half too faint for Europe's dawn
of peace."

This is the sombre sum of Judah's fate—
This the darksome record of Israel's doom
Avouched by them who have dethroned the
Spirit
But not • protested by the lips of Freedom's
friends.
Who, tomorrow, will gather up these shards of
men?
Who offer shelter to . Rachel's unshepherded
children?
Who bind their wounds, as others' wounds,
Who welcome them into the morrow's dawn?
These sons of prophets who sculptured the hopes
of man,
Who fed the hungry hearts of the centuries
With the good bread of righteous freedom,
Will meet upon the streets of Europe's shattered
cities
None but those with grieving freighted down
Or thcise who can't forswear their age-long
hatreds.

Come, now, Britain! Why touch up the truth
With the white frosting of subtleties?
You well divined the goal of Hitler and the
Goebbels pattern.
Yet you, mighty England, you earth-encircling
empire,
Quailed before the gutteral ravings of the Hun.
And though your peasants, craftsmen and men
of Parliament
Vouchsafed to peoples law and ordered justice,
You said not nay to the vandal's charted carnage,
You said not Nay.

Can it be that England's conscience moved not?
Can it be that Christian England stirred not?
Surely the heart of England and England's an-
cient spirit
Shrank back, amazed, at Jewry's extirpation
In the Hun's abattoirs, in Poland, and in the
Ukraine.
But England's spokesmen, wise in world con-
cerns,
Surveyed the long lines of Jews consigned to
lethal trains
Like spectators following the inexorable gait -
Of doomed performers in a Grecian tragedy,
And said not Nay.

Harofe Haivri Features
War Medical Symposium

The latest issue of Harofe
Haivri (Hebrew Medical Jour-
nal), which has been published
for the last 16 years under the
editorship of Dr. Moses Einhorn
of New York, has just come off
the press, featuring a symposium
on war medicine.
Among the subjects discussed
of particular interest are "The
Treatment of Gunshot Wounds of
the Head and Brain During the
Present War" by Dr. Leo M.
Davidoff. Dr. William Bierman,
in his article "Physical Therapy
in War Medicine," emphasizes
the greater need for physiothe-
rapy in this war. Dr. Simon D.
Ehrlich contributes to this sym-
posium a pertinent article "The
Status of Anesthesia in Military
Surgery," in which he discusses
the types of anesthetics used. In
his article "The Importance of
the Proper Prosthesis in Post-
War Rehabilitation," Dr. H. M.
Wertheim outlines the factors
which must be considered in pro-
viding artificial limbs.
The section on Palestine and
War contains a timely article on
the activities of the Kupat Holism
by Israel Mereminski, represen-
tative of the Histadrut and an
executive on the Supervisory

Hoard of Kupat Holim.
In the section on Old Medical
Manuscripts, Dr. Leo Nen -ioy of
Yale University brings to light a
thirteenth century manuscript, in
his article entitled "The Arabia
Pharmacopoeia of Abu Al-Mina
Al-Kuhin Al-Attar." The chap-
ters on drugs and therapy are of
great interest to both the phar-
macologist and the medical pro-
fession.
Under the heading of "Per-
sonalia," Dr. Solomon R.. Kagan
contributes a biographical sketch
of Prof. Max Neuberger, well-
known medical historian.

Think, 0 'Britain—
You who once, in dire times, spoke forth
A sacred promise, world-acknowledged,
A plighted pledge proclaimed upon the honor
,
of your King—
Would you remain -the-Britain of your ancient
fame
To palter with your covenanted word
With a people ancienter than you? -
You, England, who oft gave voice to man's
immortal dreams
Of peace and justice and- generous freedom—
Will you deny to Israel his age-long yearning
To make 'his olden home his rightful hearth,
To live,- through well-accepted toil and sweating,
Where, pledged of God and patriarch-founded,
The Hebrews grew to glory and history's
wonder,
And where, again, in dispensations new
They may foreshadow the new advent of Man?

And . now, Britain. know this—
Your cities, scared and blackened by the bombs,
Your villages, amidst the very rubble of their
ruined houses,
Stand where they stood before, bright with
tomorrow's hopes,
Visioning fairer work, dreaming a peace for
sturdy freemen.
But do you know what Jews shall see tomorrow,
Those Jews whom death has not yet clutched
unto her bosom?
Your wise men know; and if they spoke forth-.
rightly
Would tell you, British folk of the moors and
shops and collieries,
