D es? C Prepared

For Heavy Season;
gets Early Start

Opening of the 1944 passenger
and freight navigation season on
the Great Lakes considerably
earlier than last year, the D & C
steamer City of Detroit III made
its initial run between Detroit
and Cleveland Saturday night,
according to James MacMillan,
general manager of the Detroit
and Cleveland Navigation Com-
pany.
"It is fortunate that an un-
usually' mild winter has permit-
ted this early sailing," he ex-
plained, "because the need for
additional transportation facili-
ties to handle the great number
of wartime travellers between
these two industrial centers was
never greater."
D & C boats are now leaving
Detroit and Cleveland each night
at 11:30 and arriving in each city
the next.morning at 7.
"With the extremely congested
condition of other types of trans-
portation and with the scarcity
of hotel accommodations, it is ex-
pected- that the 1944 season will
be one of the largest in the 76
year history of the D & C lines,"
MacMillan said. "We have made
preparations to handle capacity
crowds, throughout the season."
The regular nightly D & C
railings also will aid considerably
in the movement of freight be-
tween these industrial areas, it
was said. "When the D & C sea-
son is fully underway, we have
capacity for carrying more than
1,000 tons of freight nightly,"
MacMillan explained.
D & C steamers to Buffalo will
start about May 1, , but the defi
nite opening date will not be
determined until later t h rs
month, it was said. D & C cruise
ships wil start operation in June.

Arch Ward, writing in the Chi-
cago Tribune, tells . the follow-
ing:
Three salesmen were eating
dinner in a Washington hotel.
The bill was $30 and all reached
for the check. The first fellow
said his firm was in the 50 per
cent bracket, doing war work,
and that the bill actually would
cost him only $15. The second
man said, "Let me pay it. We're
in the 80 per cent bracket and
it will cost me only $6." The
third man said, "I'll pay the
check. My firm 4lis working on a
cost-plus basis and we'll make
$3 on the meal."

His Good Fortune
The Chazzan of the City of
Chelm was about to marry off
one of his daughters. Inasmuch
as he was a poor man, the con-
gregation advanced him 250 ru-
bles to be deducted from his sal-
ary during the next five years.
Before accepting the money the
Chazzan addressed the trustees
of the congregation in the follow-
ing manner:
"Gentlemen, please understand
that I am taking the money only
on t h e following condition:
Should I live five more years,
then it is your good fortune; but
should I die before the end of
that period then it is of course
my good fortune."

Clever Deduction
At a maternity hospital re-
cently, the' identity tags of three
babies were lost. One was known
to be a German, the second an
Italian, and the third a Jewish
child.
A clever nurse made a valu-
able suggestion, and it was car-
ried out. She went into the nurs-
ery and exclaimed in the pies
ence of the three babies, "Heil
Hitler!"
The German baby stood up and
gave the Nazi salute, the Jewish
baby stood up and shOok his fist,
and the Italian baby puckered up
his face and started to bawl.

right. But you should see where
I've got Hitler."
