Twenty Great World Exiles
Honored in Impressive Book

- For Jews, who have tasted the
bitterness of exile more than any
other people, "The • Torch of
Freedom," a biographical series
of 20 exiles, edited by Emil Lud-
wig and Henry B.. Kranz, has
greater'significance than for any
other group.
This volume, a recent Farrar
& Rinehart publication, is . a
Most impressive collection of es-
says. It is a book about exiles
by exiles.
The editors originally intend-
.
:
have the lives of the 20
exiles depicted by their own
countrymen. In some instances,
however, that proved impossible.
Sun Yat-Sen and Bolivar,' for in-
stance, do not have countrymen
- in exile. Therefore their lives
were written by exiles of an-
other country. But all the auth-
ors, like the subjects of their
essays, are exiles.
Historic Torchbearers
All the biographies are about
torchbeai'ers of historic events.
Included among them are poets,
statesmen, soldiers, writers, rev-
olutionaries. The illustrations
are by Esta Cosgrave.
The editors began with Ovid,
whoses toy is depicted by Lion
Feuchtwanger. Sigrid Undset,
Nobel Prize winner, wrote on
King Olay. Tycho Brahe's life
is .presented by Karin Michaelis.
Yvan Goll writes on - Voltaire.
Joseph Witlin is the author of
the sketch on Tadeusz Kosciu-
szko. Simon Bolivar is depicted
in the article by J. Alvarez del
Vayo. Andre Maurois writes on
Lord Byron.
Great Characters
H. E. Jacob is the author of
the very fasbinating essay on
Heinrich Heine. Victor Hugo is
presented to the readers by Rob-
ert de St. Jean. Hans Habe, one
of the outstanding refugee writ-
ers in this country, is the au-
thor of the article on Lajos Kos-
suth. Count Carlo Sforza, who
is destined to play an important

-

role in the setting up of a dem-
ocratic government in Italy,
writes on Giuseppe Mazzini, and
Constantino Panuzio describes
the life of Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Pierre Cot's story of Karl
Marx is one of the most inter-
esting the entire volume. Al-
fred Neumann- tells the thrilling
tale of Feodor Dostoevski. Emil
Ludwig's Carl Schurz is an
heroic character.
Heinrich Mann's essay on
Emile -Zola is worth the cost of
the entire book. Then there is
the splendid essay on Thomas
Garrigue Masaryk by his son,
Jan Masaryk. Henry. B. Kranz
writes on Sun Yat-Sen. Lydia
Nadejena's description of Niko-
lay Lenin is magnificent. And
the article by Raoul Auern
heimer on Stefan Zweig is a fine
literary contribution.
"The Torch of Freedom," as a
compilation of essays on men
who fought for freedom, is just
what the title states. It is an
unusually fine book and it de-
serves the large circulation it is
now securing throughout . the
land.

Passover
Greetings

NEW YORK (Religious News
Seryic e) — Confidence in- a
speedy and complete victory for
the United Nations keynotes a
Passover message issued here by
the Synagogue Council of Amer-
lea, which represents Orthodox,
Conservative, and Reform con-
gregations.
One reason for this confidence
is that large sections of enslaved
lands have already been lib-
erated from the yoke of oppres-
sion, the statement, signed by'
Dr. Israel Goldstein, president
of the Council, says, adding:
"Let Israel's faith in God never
falter, - and let not the nations
of the earth ever despair of the
victory that- is sure to come.
Many are t h e sacrifices still
ahead, long and uphill is the
road; but the day of the op-
pressor is certain to end."
