* 700,000 Christians Face
Fate of Jews in Hungary
Full Nurem6urg Program to Be Established in Hungary
Affecting Christians as Well as 750,000 Jewish
,Residents, Reports to Ankara State
ANKARA (JPS)—With Hungary under the strangling grip of
the Nazis, reports reaching here told of Nazi preparations to
„introduce the full Nuremburg program of anti-Jewish legislation
which may place 706,000 Hungarian Christians, with some Jewish
ancestry, into the same category as the 750,000 Hungarian Jews.
(According to a JTA dispatch from Stockholm, all Jews in
Hungary over six years old are now obliged to wear yellow
badges, the Nazi-controlled•Hungarian radio announced.
The Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reports more
than 10,000 Jews had been arrested and placed in concentration
camps in Hungary. Several hundred have committed suicide.)
MesSages reaching Borne tell of thousands of Jewish children,
iwhose parents have been interned or imprisoned, roaming the
streets of Budapest, the Hungarian capitol, and digging into garbage
i cans for food.
Rapidly falling in line with Nazi policies, the Hungarian Bar
Association has petitioned the Department of Justice to disbar all
Jewish attorneys. The numerus clausus law, long in effect in
Hungary, had whittled down the number of practicing Jewish
[attorneys to 1,848.

AMERICA
The second session of the United Relief and
Rehabilitation Administration will be held
some time in June, it was announced by Sir
Arthur Salter, acting director general. The
meeting will probably fake place in Canada.
The first session of the UNRRA was held at
Atlantic City in November. At that time the
UNRRA failed to act on requests of Jewisn
organizations that the problem of Jewish re-
lief in postwar Europe be dealt with as a
separate problem, in view of the fact that the
Jews have been singled out by the Nazis as
special victims.
The Supreme Court has refused to review
the case of George Sylvester Viereck, some-
times called the "brains of Nazi propaganda
in America," who was sentenced to a term
of one to five years in Federal prison for
failure to comply with the law requiring for-
eign agents to register with the State De-
partment.
PALESTINE
Jewish Palestine jubilantly received a re-
port from Istanbul, Turkey, that 243 Jewish
refugees have arrived there from Rumania en
route here. They left the port of Constanza,
aboard the • Bulgarian liner Milka, at the
twelfth hour just before the Nazis took over
Rumania, which has been for several years
completely Nazified as regards its attitude to-
ward the Jews. The 243 refugees were res-
cued through the efforts of the Jewish
Agency.

Ask Seizure of 53,000 Jewish Residences
The Budapest Municipal Council has under advisement a
motion by Naziphile councilmen proposing the immediate seizure
of 53,000 residences occupied by Jews in order to relieve the scarcity
in housing. The motion proposes that bombed-out Germans and
.3.arge Hungarian families be moved in to replace the Jews.
Persons high in the new Hungarian government and official
.. government bulletins are cfferir g explanations for their anti-Jewish
policies. An official bulletin charges that the preceding government
had protected the Jews, so that despite anti-Jewish legislation,
twc-thirds of all shops in Budapest were allegedly Jewish-owned
and the poorest Jews earned 3,000 pengoes a year as against 5,000
pengoes a year earned by the average noh-Jew.
Minister of the Interior Vaross announced that during' the war
years there was an influx of 70,000 additional Jews, of whom 30,000
are in the country illegally. Ladislav Baky, vice minister of the
interior, announced that he will "wage merciless war against the
Jews until all Jewish elements are liquidated."
_Ridicules Roosevelt's Appeal to Balkans
(In Berlin, foreign office press spokesman Dr. Schmidt ridiculed
President Roosevelt's appeal to the Balkan populations to aid the
Jews to escape the. Nazi dragnet.)
While the Hungarian police, under Gestapo direction, had begun
a round-up of all Jews, including those baptised, Catholic Cardinal
Seredi was reported pleading with the government that Jews who
had accepted the. Catholic faith, be spared the persecutions.
Eden Non-Committal on Palestine
LONDON (JPS-Palcor)—Foreign Secretary Eden declared in
' Commons that the British government was associating itself with
President Roosevelt's plea to the Balkan peoples that they aid the
Jews to escape Hitler's grasp.
In reply to a query from Samuel H. Silverman, Laborite M.P.,
Mr. Eden said that "happily there are individuals and even official
-.authorities among the satellites who have resisted the evil of the
C-erman example and have shown toleration and mercy. The British *
government is concerned to make it clear that those who followed
the right path also will not be forgotten on the day of final
reckoning."
John David Mack, Laborite M.P., asked whether it would not
be more practical and effective to facilitate the admission into
Palestine of "as many unfortunate people as posssible." In this
connection he recalled the large number still interned on "the island
of Mauritius because they coulrin't get visas for Palestine."
Mr. Eden replied that "the difficulty in respect to Palestine
is not that no visas are outstanding, but that these unhappy people
are unable to get out of the countries in which they are persecuted.
This country has nothing to reproach itself on."

Bucharest, Vichy Complain of Jewish Partisans
LONDON (JPS)—From two Nazi-satellite capitols came reports
of Jewish partisans fightihg in the underground and in the ranks
of guerilla bands against the Axis.
Report from. Ankara, Turkey, quoted the Rumanian radio to
the effect that thousands of Rumanian Jews, of those deported to
Transnistria, had *fled to the guerilla armies aiding the advance of
the Red forces invading Rumanian territory. From Ankara also
came the report that Ritter von Mann had been appointed military
governor of Bucharest with orders to enforce anti-Jewish legislation.
The Vichy radio, as recorded here, charged that Jews, leading
the partisan movement within France, "were receiving the widest
support from misguided Frenchmen."

Reports Chaos in Rescue Work in London
NEW YORK (JPS)---There is plenty of good will but much
chaos in London among the organizations and official bodies en-
gaged in rescue of Jews from Europe, it is reported by Dr. A.
Tartakower, who has just returned from England on a mission for
the World Jewish Congress. There is much overlapping, duplication
and confusion in rescue work, he stated, but the attitude is much
friendlier now. He ascribed this favorable change, in considerable
part to the statement of President Roosevelt.
Dr. Tartakower found that the governments-in-exile are making
extensive studies bf postwar reconstruction plans, but that these
plans do not include provisions for specifically Jewish problems. He
stated, however, that he found a great deal of co-opergtion on
rescue problems, and that he expects the Poles to annbunce a
special bureau to attend to Jewish rescue.
He stated that as a result of a study in Scotland, where Polish
units are stationed, he made a series of recommendations to the
Polish government-in-exile, including a request for a definite state-
ment by the Polish military authorities that anti-Semitism is a
breach of discipline, and for the institution of a program of educa-
tion to combat anti-Semitism.

From Kiev to Western Ukraine, Not a Single Jew Remains
MOSCOW (JTA) — A Jewish tankist from Biro-Bidjan, now
fighting with Red Army troops in the. Ukraine, reveals in a re-
port made public by the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee here,
that from Kiev down the Dnieper, and westward to Zhitomir,
Vinnitsa and into the western Ukraine he encountered no Jews
in areas where, before the German invasion, hundreds of thous-
ands of Jews had resided.
"From Kiev," he writes, "I rode through hundreds of in-
b abited places along the right bank of the Dnieper, but there
wasn't a Jew left in any of them. Nor did I find any Jews in
Zhitomir, Berdichev, Belaya, Tschekov or Kazatin, or in the
thousands of villages and towns we took in the Ukraine. There
were thousands and thousands of Jews living in these places when
the Germans came."
A junior officer attached to an infantry regiment of the 227th
German Grenadier Division discloses that the usual Nazi method
of mass-execution of thousands of Jews by Machinegun fire was
replaced later by a more efficient and faster procedure. Enor-
mous numbers of people were jammed into gigantic pits, most
often dug by the victims, which had been mined. When the pits
were packed to capacity the mines were exploded killing the
bulk of the Jews and covering any who were not instantly killed
with piles of debris which suffocated them.
