kShulman Boys Meet in India

WWI Assignment Brings

LT. MARSHALL SHULMAN

Two brothers — who had not
seen each other for six months—
met last week somewhere in In-
dia.
Lt. Marshall Shulman and Cpl.
Leon Melvin (Bud) Shulman ca-
bled their parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Harry M. Shulman of 2651 Webb
Ave., last Wednesday of their
meeting.
• Lt. Shulman left this country
three weeks ago by plane on a
special assignment for the Office
of War Information. On his stop-
over in Brazil, where he waited
for plane connections, he man-
aged to obtain gifts for his par-
!ents.
Several days later his special
()WI assignment brought him to

India—and to the station of his
brother's assignment.
Shulman is a former news-
paperman. A graduate of the
University of Michigan, he also
studied at Harvard University.
He was formerly on the staff of
the Detroit News and later served
as executive vice-president of the
Council for Democracy. He is the
author of radio scripts that were
-used by the Army personnel.
Cpl. "Bud" Shulman is a Cen-
tral High graduate. He studied
at Wayne and was a sophomore
at the University of Michigan
College of Engineering at the
time of his enlistment in the Re-
serves in 1942. He -has been in
service since March 14, 1943.

Pfc. Jay Richard Cooper, 21. has

Joseph Jacoby, son of Mrs.
Jeanette Jacoby of the Wilshire
Hotel, was recently graduated
from the Officers' Candidate
School in Australia as a Second
Lieutenant in the Medical Ad-
ministration. He returned to
Australia to attend the school
after recuperating from an at-
tack of malaria, received while
serving with a first aid station
during two campaigns in New
Guinea, including the Battle of
Buna.
A graduate of Highland Park
High, Lt. Jacoby attended High-
land Park Jun-
ior College for
two years and
Wayne Univer-
sity, where he
was a pre-med-
ical student for
three years. He
was formerly a
state champion
breast - stroke
swimmer and
at one time, was
a swimming in- Lt. Jacoby
structor at his post in the Paci-
fic. While stationed at Ft. Del, ens,
Mass., he was a corporal in the
infantry and after going over-
seas was transferred to a med-
ical detachment, starting again
as a private.
Lt. Jacoby has been in service
three years and was a member
of the Jewish Center and Phi
Alpha Fraternity. He is 26.

In service 11 months, Pfc.
Cooper is assigned to the Finance
Department of the Air Corps. He
was graduated from the Wake
Forest Finance School, North
Carolina, and later was attached
to Bowen Field, Louisville, Ky.,
then was sent to Salt Lake City
and finally to the East Coast be-
fore going overseas.
He studied at Cranbrook, and
at the time of entering service he
was a student at the University

of Michigan where he was in his
junior year.
Pfc. Cooper has two sisters,
Winifred, wife of Cpl. Paul Bro-
der, who is stationed in Califor-
nia, and Harriett, both graduates
of the University of Michigan.

Chosen for Honors

from Great Lakes, Ill., that Ben
B. Schurgin, 36, of 1009 Cool-
idge Ave., Detroit, was gradu-
ated from recruit training as
honor man of his company at the
U. S. Naval Training Station and
is now on "boot" leave.
Schurgin was elected candi-
date by his fel-

He has been
recommended to
attend Physical

cialized training.
Prior to joining the Navy he
was employed as physical educa-
tion instructor for the Detroit
Board of Education. He is a
graduate of Michigan Normal
College, Ypsilanti ; with Bache-
lor of Science and Master of
Arts degrees.
He is spending his leave here
with his wife and son.
His commanding officer, R. R.
M. Emmet, Captain, U. S. Navy,
wrote Mrs. Schurgin to tell her
of the honors accorded Mr.
Schurgin and stated: "He is to
be commended upon his consci-
entious attention to duty which
has led to this high honor."

Tech. Sgt. Philip M. Fisher,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry H.
Fisher of 3237 Buena Vista, Fly-
ing Fortress operator, is reported
to have had his face frozen while
in service. He is the husband of
the former Audrey Golden,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irving
Golden of 2535 W. Boston Blvd.
A Central High graduate, T/Sgt.
Fisher, 26, has been awarded the
Purple Heart. He was married
Jan. 11, 1942, entered service in
December, 1942, and went over-
seas last November.

Cpl. Leonard Brightman, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Bright-
man, 2462 Waverly Ave., is now
somewhere in England with the
3113th Signal Service Battalion.
He entered the service Feb. 1,
1943, and was promoted to the
rank of corporal six weeks later.
