Rabbi Friedland, Pontiac,
Enlists as Army Chaplain
'Given Leave of Absence by Temple Beth Jacob for the
Duration; Will Be Honored at Community Gathering
in Pontiac Sunday Evening
Rabbi Friedland of Temple Beth Jacob, Pontiac, will
leave next Wednesday for service as Chaplain in the U. S.
Army and will report at the Harvard University School
for Chaplains, Cambridge, Mass., for training, it was an-
nounced this week by Sam Cohen, president of the Con-
gregation.

For the past seven and a half
years, during Rabbi Friedland's
ministry in Pontiac, Temple Beth
Jacob's membership has doubled
and many improvements have
been made in the functions of the
congregation and the physical ap-
pearance of the house of worship.
A three-day-a-week school has
been introduced by Rabbi Fried-
land.
A graduate of University of
Cincinnati a n d Hebrew Union
College, where he was ordained
Rabbi, Rabbi Friedland pursued
graduate studied at the Univer-
sity of Michigan. He was identi-
fied with all progressive move-
ments, w a s an active Zionist
leader, attended national conven-
tions of the Zionist organization
as delegate and was popular in
civic movements.
He served as president of the
of the Exchange Club and as
chairman of the Pontiac Police
a n d Fireman Trial Board. In
1940 he served as president of
the Michigan Bnai Brith Council
and had served as midwest di-
rector of the National Federa-
tion of Temple Youth. He was
popular as a lecturer and made
appearances before many organi-
zations, non-Jewish as well as
Jewish.
Temple Beth Jacob has granted
Rabbi Friedland a leave of ab-
sence for the duration of the war.

CLEVELAND, 0.—A unique
manifestation of inter-racial un-
derstanding reached its climax
here when an oil painting of Lt.
Sidney P. Brooks, Cleveland

to Karamu House, a Negro com-
