Sgt. Earl Hordes Handles
Most Dangerous Ferry Line

Sgt. Earl Hordes, 25-year-old son
of Mr. and Mrs. William Hordes
of 2308 Calvert, "is handling the
hot end of the most dangerous
.ferry line in the world."
Earlier, Mr. Moody wrote that
Sgt. Hordes is running "t h i s
war's hottest ferry line."
Sgt. Hordes is a graduate of
Central High School and Wayne
University, where he received
his Master's degree in economics.
He also studied in the United
Hebrew Schools and the Farband
Shule.
He has been in active service
since Aug. 26, 1942, and was
sent overseas in May, 1943, serv-
ing in North Africa and Sicily
before going to his present post
in Italy.
On Jan. 30, 1941, Sgt. Hordes
was married to the former Bet-
ty Porvin. He has one brother,
Herbert, a Central High student,
and a sister, Mrs. Edward (Eve-
lyn) Wishnetsky, whose husband
is also serving -Overseas.

Carbondale was home on a 10-
day furlough from Camp Meade,
Maryland. He is stationed with
the Medical Corps at the 99th
General Hospital.

Pvt. Barney, are in the U. S.
Army, and a
third, Martin, is
in the Navy.
They are the

26, served in the
Navy for two
years, and was
Martin Smilo honorably dis-
charged because of an allergy
condition.
All are Temple Beth El con-
firmands. All studied in the He-
brew • schools here. In addition,
Martin was graduated from Tem-
ple Beth El high school.
Martin Smilo, 22, is a Machin-
ist's Mate, Second Class. He has
served in the Navy for a year
and a half and has been over-
seas, in New Caledonia, since
March 23, 1943. Prior to going
overseas, he received his train-
ing at Great Lakes -Naval
School. He is assigned to the
Ground Crew. He is a graduate
of Central High School and also
studied at Lawrence Technical
Institute.
Pvt. Barney Smilo,'20, was re-
cently sent overseas. He has
been in active service since last
April. He is serving with the
Tank Destroyer Corps. A gradu-
ate of Central High, he has been
active in the Habonim, labor
Zionist youth group, and had
saved sufficient funds for a visit
to Palestine, - but was prevented
from making the trip by the war.
Pfc. Sidney Smilo, 18, is serv-
ing in the Air Corps. He has
been in service since September.
He was sent last week for further
training at Springfield, Mass.
Like his brothers, he is a gradu-
ate of Central High School.
The Smilos are active in Zion-
ist and other community move-
ments. Mrs. Smilo is a member
of the board of the Ladies' Aux-
iliary of the Jewish National
Fund.
