An American Credo

President Franklin D. Roosevelt's statement to the Na-
tional Conference to Combat Anti-Semitism, called by the
American Jewish Congress, that: .

thoughts of true Americans for anti-Semitism,"

deserves a place among the most important credal declara-
tions by Americans for Americans.

them of the urgency of the existing situation.

The Mufti's Fifth Column

The Grand Mufti, who managed to escape to Berlin, is
continuing his destructive work against the Jews in Palestine
and the cause of the United Nations.

From Algiers comes the news that this man, who rose to
power in Palestine thanks to the British authorities there, is
broadcasting from his Nazi hide-out and is spreading the
libel that "a conspiracy exists to admit Jews in large num-
bers to North Africa."

It is evident that Haj Amin el Husseini, the Mufti, re-

mains a serious menace not only to Jews but to all who are
concerned that peace should be established everywhere, in-
cluding the Middle and Near East.

*

The statement made recently by the British Colonial
Secretary Stanley, in the House of Commons, that Haj Amin
is "technically still Mufti" because "no legal machinery ex-
ists for the formal disposition of the holder" of that post,
brought forth a warning from Prof. A. S. Yahuda, eminent
Arabic scholar who is now on the faculty of the New School
for Social Research in New York, that the supporters of the
Quisling-Mufti of Jerusalem "already are paving the way for
his rehabilitation in the event he succeeds in escaping from
his Nazi masters, who cannot be of use to him any more."
Prof. Yahuda sounded his warning in a lengthy letter to
the New York Times. He shows that the Arabic groups that
were entitled to vote for the post of Mufti refused to include
him in the list of candidates, that he received a very small
vote when the balloting took place and that despite the pro-
tests from Arabs "Sir Ronald Storrs, then Governor of Jeru-
salem, not only admitted Haj Amin as a candidate against
the law but even confirmed him as Mufti."
Appropriation of power by the British authorities in 1921
thus was responsible for troubles which not only made the
Jewish position in Palestine difficult, but which threatened
for a time to undermine the entire United Nations status in
the Middle East because of the treachery that was inspired
by the Mufti.

Prof. Yahuda demands that the Mufti should be dis-
missed. It is a demand that has been echoed in many quar-
ters, and it should be combined with further demands that
he be tried for treason and murder together with the arch-
criminals who were responsible for this war.

Talmudic Tales

Yeshivah's 'Torah Month'

Yeshivath Beth Yehudah's "Torah Month," now drawing
to a close, should serve as occasion for re-evaluation of our
community's educational standards.
This Yeshivah has accomplished an important purpose
in the community by enlisting more than 300 additional boys
and girls for Jewish studies.
Hitherto, the United Hebrew Schools represented the
predominant Detroit educational system, with the Yiddish
schools occupying second place in point of numbers. Now,
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah occupies second place.
"Torah Month," like "Hebrew Education Month" of the
United Hebrew Schools, is primarily an occasion to pop-
ularize the schools sponsoring the celebration. When it serves
to increase attendance in the schools, it is a justifiable cele-
bration and should have wholehearted endorsement in the
community.
The United Hebrew Schools have recognized, however,
that "Education Month," if limited to a few weeks' celebra-
tion, becomes a farce, and its management has decided to
conduct its informative campaign about the schools on a
year-round basis.
"Torah Month" is proving a splendid means of propa-
ganda for the Yeshivah, and the faculty and management
of the Beth Yehudah schools have earned the admiration of
the community for their devotion to educational efforts. As
long as schools prosper on the merits of their own curricula,
without capitalizing on undignified competitive schemes of
"taking away" pupils from established schools, their con-
tributions to the community will be given the credit they
deserve.

situation at all but adds to the confusion. When the Balfour
Declaration was first issued and the mandate was granted
to Great Britain, Palestine actually was placed under an
international trusteeship, by common consent of the British,
the Jews and the Arabs.
It is because the British had failed to live up to the
letter of the agreement that Arabs were encouraged in their
destructive efforts and Jews are today compelled to ask
for firmer guarantees than had been given the status of the
Jewish National Home after the last war.
The Congressional Palestine Resolutions ask for nothing
more than a reaffirmation of the established American policy
incorporated in the Congress Resolution in 1922. There is
nothing unreasonable about the present proposals.
