This group of refugees is part of the 754 Jewish men, women
and children from almost every country in Europe, including the
liberated areas of Morocco and Algeria, who were brought from
Portugal to Palestine on the Nyassa last week. Some had wandered
for more than 10 years across Europe before their embarkation for
Eretz Israel.

Personality Sketch

Rescue operations were made possible. with funds provided by
American Jews to the United Jewish Appeal for Refugees, Overseas
Needs and Palestine. Transportation was provided by the Joint
Distribution Committee. The new arrivals are being established in
agricultural and urban centers in Palestine by the United Palestine
Appeal.

Society

The Nyassa was the first refugee ship to cross the Mediterranean
since Italy entered the war. An additional 3,500 homeless men,
women and children are - now on their way to Palestine, with funds
to be provided by the 1944 U. J. A. campaign for $32,000,000. The

National Refugee Service is the third agency in the U. J. A.
