Lead 1.1 . S. Jewry ' s Great Rescue Effort

The largest combined rescue operations ever undertaken by American Jews
will be carried on through the 1944 nationwide campaign of the United Jewish
Appeal for Refugees, Overseas Needs and Palestine, which will seek to raise
$32,000,000 this year to meet the vastly increased needs of its constituent or-
ganizations. A dual challenge confronts the Joint Distribution Committee, Unit-
ed Palestine Appeal and National Refugee Service, which derive their funds
from the United Jewish Appeal. They must meet the ever growing respon-
sibilities of wartime relief and rescue. At the same time they must broaden their
programs to provide reconstruction assistance for Jews liberated by Allied vic-
tories. The biggest campaign in the history of the Jewish community in the
U. S. will be led by (from left to right) Dr. James G. Heller, William Rosen-
wald 4nd Dr. Jonah B. Wise, who have been elected to serve as the National
Chairmen of the 1944 United Jewish Appeal.
