L'Ilonoth, the New Year of the Trees, will be observed here
next Wednesday evening, at a-public gathering of all holders
of the Bue and White Jewish National Fund Boxes, the JNF
Council of Detroit.
Featuring the showing of a Palestinian talking picture,

this event will be utilized to
celebrate the holiday which is
marked by the planting of trees
in the Jewish Homeland.

Public Invited
The public is invited to attend
this event. Admission will be
free. Hamisha Asar traditional
refreshments will be served.
In Jewish Palestine, which has
made so great a contribution to
the United Nations' war effort in
the Middle East, Hanisha Asar
B'Shevat will be observed by
young and old in accordance with
the ancient tradition: to go out
to the fields and forests and plant
new trees as symbols of life,
growth and freedom.
This year the planting will be
largely concentrated in the Sol-
diers' Forest, inaugurated a year
ago shortly after the rout of
Rommel's Afrika Korps at El
Alamein.
Planting Program
In the U. S. Hamisha Asar
festivals in schools, youth groups
and community centers, and
functions that have been planned
by all branches of the Zionist
movement, will have as their
central feature the tree planting
program of the JNF which is the
principal instrument of the Jew-
ish people for land redemption
and reforestation work in Pales-
tine. A popular effort to secure
contributions (a gift of $1.50 to
the Jewish National Fund makes
possible the planting of one tree)
will be made.
In the next column is a selec-
tion of trees that are native to
the Jewish National Home and of
those that have been planted
since the Keren Kayemeth began
its reforestation work four dec-
ades ago. They are: (1) Acacia,
(2) Pine, (3) Cypress, (4) Pine,
(5) Olive, (6) Carob, (7) Haw-
thorn.
3,500,000 Trees
To date, the Jewish National
Fund has planted, on an area
exceeding 14,000 dunams in all
parts of the country, a number
of forests, groves and gardens,
comprising a total of more than
3,500,000 trees. The Herzl Forest,
the George Washington Forest
and the Balfour Forest are among

Roosevelt Greets
Daily Forward on
25th Anniversary

t h e outstanding reforestation
projects completed by the JNF.
There are 2,600,000 Pines in the
forests. The Jerusalem Pine is
a native tree. It is related to the
cedar for which the Lebanon is
famed. The Cypress also is re-
lated to the Cedar, and 109,000
Cypresses have been planted
mainly in the Herzl Forest.
Among the relics of Palestine's
ancient forests there have been
found the Oak and the Pistachio,
the Carob and the Pine, the Olive
and the Fir to which the Bible
makes frequent reference.
To these native trees several
new species from abroad have
been added. First among these
foreign trees to be acclimatized
in Palestine was the Eucalyptus,
*brought from Australia and
called by the Arabs today the
"Jew's Tree," 150,000 having been
planted. Like the Eucalyptus,
t h e Casuarina w a s similarly
brought from Australia.

those who greeted the Jewish
Daily Forward's Chicago and
Detroit sections on their 25th
anniversary last week.
In his message to Jacob Siegel,
managing editor of the Chicago
section, which includes the De-
troit edition, President Roosevelt
stated:
. "Hearty congratulations on .
the 25th anniversary of the

Chicago. The present strug-
