•Hohenernser's Background

cantor Hbhenemser, guest art-

cert, was Cantor of the Haupt
Synagogue in Munich, Germany,
which vvas destroyed by the
Nazis Nov. 9, 1938. After the
burning of his synagogue, he was
confined fo - • two months in the
notorious Dachau concentration
camp. Previous to that time he
had -applied for a visa for the
United States and his release
from Dachau was secured by the
Consul at Stuttgart and he came
to this country soon thereafter.
His mother, now dead, at one
time lived in Pittsburgh for
seven years. His father, consci-
ous of the fact that the Hohenem-
sers had lived in Munich since
1644, refused to leave Germany.
Cantor Hohenemser, a gradu-
ate of the Teachers' Seminary at
Wuerzburg and the Munich Con-
servatory, first held the post of
-cantor in the historic Rashi Syn-
; agogue at Worms. His first post
in this country was in Rabbi
Ferdinand Isserman's Temple in
St. Louis.
