IRVING I. KATZ

just published a pamphlet en-
titled "A Selected Reference List
of Material on Synagogue Admin-
istration and Finance," which
was compiled and prepared by
Irving I. Katz, executive secre-
tary of TeMple Beth El.

The pamphlet represents a pio-
neering' work and- is the first of
its kind to be published. Katz
is serving his second term as
president of the National Associ-
ation _ of Temple Secretaries.

Typical of the comments re-
ceived by Mr. Katz, on the pub-
lishing of the guide, is the follow-
ing letter from S. D. Schwartz,
executive secretary of the Chi-
cago Sinai Congregation and dean
of 'the professional. secretaries of
Reform congregations in the
United States:

"Your compilation is an ex-
ceedingly brilliant one. - You are,
in very truth, placing the work
of the Temple Secretaries on a
real standard and taking . away
from it the haphazard bungling
approach that has heretofore and
even now prevails to a consider-
able extent. I have read the' ma-
terial with keen interest and feel
that you have made a real con-
tribution."

Rabbi Jacob M. Brown, execu-
tive director of the Michi-
gan Synagogue Conference, an-
nounced 'this 'week that the fifth
anniversary - of the Conference
will be observed • at a quarterly
meeting of congregational lead-
ers this Sunday, at 2:30 p. m., at
Congregation. Bnai David, Elni-
hurst and 14th Streets.

Osias Zwerdling of Ann Arbor, -
president of the Conference, will
preside.
A spokesman for the U. S.
Treasury Department will outline
plans for a War Bond drive to be
inaugurated through OrthodOx
synagogues.
At this meeting, Rabbi Brown
announces, plans will be dis-
cussed for the expansion of the
Conference program as formu-
lated at the recent convention.
In an outline of the five-year
history of the Conference, Rabbi
Brown points out that it was
formed on Jan. 15, 1939, by 100
delegates from many communi-
ties in the state who had met in
Bay City. Rabbi Brown pointS
out that "a 10-point program,
listing the objectives of the new-
ly-formed Vaad Hakegiloth, was
formulated at that convention,
aiming to unify the congregations
for the preservation of tradition-
al Judaism and to assist smaller
communities in their . religious
and educational endeavors as
well as to represent orthodox
Jewry before the general com-
munity." .
During its existence, the Mich-
igan Synagogue Conference,
Rabbi Brown states, has been .in-
strumental in organizing the
Vaad HaYeshivoth, which super-
vises collections. for religious in-
stitution s; Vaad Hahatzalah,
which assists in rescuing relig-
ious leaders who have been
trapped- by the Nazis; and the
Women's League for Sabbath_Ob-
servance, through whose efforts
most of the bakeries and 20 gro-
ceries have decided to close on
the' Sabbath.

Ella Winter, Australian - born
psyChologist, will address - the
Cass Town Hall next Friday'
morning, Jan. 28, on the subject
"Our Children in War Time."
